Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So, word on the street....or gravel road, whatever...is a pit bull's on the loose a couple neighbors down. They're workin to find his owner, but can't get their hands on him. Sure hope he steers clear of here. Luckily all my pens and animals and any entrance to them is fenced off, but still has me nervous.

Ahhh, I wouldn't worry too much. I have met plenty of Pits on my mail routes, and most of them, MOST, were sweet dogs. There was the one I had to talk down for about 20 minutes, while she was snarling and glaring at my left arm! Had one starved one dumped off at my house one time too. Growled at me getting out of my truck. Sorry...he didn't make it. But just in case, lock & load!

Quote: That is the only white I have. A chicken friend has hatchery WR.... but I think they have BR in them too because I got black chicks. I have a white Olive Egger, she does not throw white chicks really. I think I have hatched 1 white chick from her.

So would the preference be a white chickens that is NOT dominate white?

BECKY?????? I NEED A WHITE MARANS PULLET PLEASE.... you can have her back after I do some test hatches.

yeah, the breed isn't what makes me nervous...its the time of year that's making me nervous for dogs to be showing up. I live not far from a creek and animals that have been dumped will follow the creek up and down and show up around here usually when it starts warming up. Used to have really bad wild dog packs that would go after anything, including people. They got those pretty well under control, but stray animals still happen a lot...just never know whether they are lost or what. And never know what they will do.

Are Leghorns Dominant White? I didn't know. From what I have learned from the Silkie, which are recessive White, the recessive can mask the other colors, so you won't know what you'll get. I'm new at this, but if the Leghorns are dominant white, I would think they would be the way to go? Don, is that right, or do I have it backwards??

I hate to hear that, people are so cruel sometimes. I used to get a lot of dogs dropped off here, all kinds. Most I took in and fed for awhile because they were scared and starving. Others like that Pit, didn't make it. I am a dog lover, can't ever remember a time in my whole life that I haven't had one, or six. I hope it goes well for all involved, especially you! You just don't need the added stress right now for sure!

indeed....I never thought I'd be so tired, but think both my mom and I are just experiencing stress relief that things with my dad are moving forward, so feel like I'm wilting now....
I'm a dog lover as well...I find it really hard to say no when I see a dog in need. If left to make my own decisions I'd probably take in all of them, but know I can't...haha...

I live about 20 miles from a huge Army base. My thinking is, that the folks that are getting ready to PS, can't find homes for their animals, so take them to the "country" or to someone else's home that looks like an animal lover, and hope they fare well. I just KNOW that's where that monster snake had to come from, wasn't a native by any sense of the word, HAD to be someone's pet. Never did see the head or the end of tail of that snake. It was crossing my driveway which is 8 feet wide, with 3 feet of grass on both sides!!

Never did see it again, guess he didn't make it through the winter?
