Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Excuse me for asking. I am new here does someone have perfect Maran colors. I want to see what you are aiming for to one day get Maran's accepted in a show ..Has this been established?

Marans are a relatively new breed to us here in the U.S. and have just been accepted recently to the APA in 2 color varieties, Black Copper and Wheatens. No-one has Marans with perfect colors, some may have Marans that are close, but all in all Marans are still very much a work in progress.

The young Blue Copper boy that I am growing out. Mr. Mr.

Pullets and the smaller cockerel next to him are the same age. I love his size.
Kim, This Blue boy has a lot going in the right direction. If you have time put a new picture up around thirty days or so. Just to see how he develops. With this male you do not need the splash males. If you get a splash female treat her like royalty.

THere is a card. It contains 9 photos of the marans egg color intensity and a numerical number for each level of darkness. You can buy this. Since I have not done this yet I don't remember where to buy it, perhaps the marans club. THen you can compare your eggs to the card. Hope this helps. THis thread moves fast, and when the members are on a roll, they miss some posts. Hang in and you will learn a lot. ANd have some fun too. Welcome to BYC!! I lurk more than I post! lol

edited to ad, perfect is hard to find. Lurk and you will learn. Right now Don is evaluating a bird via pictures. GO back to the beiginning and you will see many photos of various quality birds. ALl about getting close as possible to the SOP.

Sorry for the edit. I thought you meant egg colors.

Thank you very much for your candor Don. I appreciate it greatly. Both Splash boys will be going to auction. I wanted so badly for one of them to work out but it looks like my luck is far better with Blue Coppers than the Blacks or the Splash. Can we say Soup de'jour. (sorry for the spelling, I don't speak French or type it for that matter, lol)

I am very much liking this young Blue Copper boy. I will definitely post more photos of him for you.
I have a couple of Splash pullets that are from the same hatch, but they will be going back in with their father, Lil' Bill. Both pullets hatched from very dark eggs so I am hoping that one more backcross will give a bit more color in eggs and then I will feel as though I have made some progress in Splash egg color. Only took around 4 years and lots of culling to get there with the Splash egg color.

I have hopes of testing this Blue boy out on my original Davis Splash hen, Darryl, once she is done being broody. She is at it again, like normal, she tries to be broody every few weeks. This time she is even more determined so she is going to be moved today and given some eggs. By the time she is done and done raising the babies the blue boy should be old enough to test.
