Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am having issues with posting on here tonight, hope this gets through. Number 1 roo looks to have some serious issues with his comb, ie 2 sprigs on the blade, and what appears to be sprigs on the left side as well. You do NOT want to pass that on! Roo 2 looks like he has nearly clean shanks, and the site won't let me review other pics. Blue Roo looks to have wry tail, don't kid yourself, if he is making moderate turns with that rudder now, he will be more so in the future! Hard to get rid of if you ignore it! It will pass on in spades!! JMO

I have looked at number 1so many times its not funny. He doesnt have any sprigs. He does have a rear serration though. Both BCM are light on the feather shanks. 1 has more and he does have a couple outer toe feathers. I will breed him with some birds that have a lot more so i can get some balance. 2 i am culling for sure do to his comb. Out of all 3 #1 is by far my best.

On the end of his blade are 2 small sprigs run your finger over them they are not a separation and they only multiply worse than flies

Yup, not only that, but the two side sprigs that seem to be on the right side of his comb (previously I had said left side, my bad). The number one roo also has a high tail set and squirrelish tail. I would not call those two bumps at the end of the blade a serration, believe me, you will get uglier things from that breeding! After all the crap I have been through with bad combs and wry tails in the last 2+ years, I do know it when I see it; and it is coming your way with those roos.

I will look at him more closely, but I think what you are seeing as a sprig is something in the background of the photo, not on his comb/blade.
if you look at the last photo of him you posted, instead of a smooth line along the bottom of the blade there is a small part of it that points downward. I believe that's what Don is referring to.

This male is the worst one you have pictured. The Comb blade turns sideways, Looks to have fuzz between the toes, poor leg feathering. Best of all he has the Wheaten influence with the feathers below the wing and Neck being tinged with brown feathers. Not a keeper.

Thanks for the critique. Kind of funny, I'm sure most people posting pics of their birds are hoping for positive feedback. I am glad to have one to cull!

Are you planning to collect eggs for incubating?

If not, I let my extraFBCM boys run with the flock and they have their own little flock of girls. I'll pull them for breeding when I need them for a FBCM hen.

THis question came up a few pages ago--not a recommended cross.

Perhaps someone remembers differently.
No not for incubation. I was just going to let them do what they do. If she happens to become broody at some point I may let her sit them and just see what happens.
Thanks!

Yikes you all have such sharp eyes, picking up on those details in a photo! I will need to get bird in hand to see what you are talking about.
