Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Country Chickens, if these males are hatch mates to your pullets I would only keep #5 and go out and get another male to use over the pullets, the second year you could come back with the #5 male onto the young pullets you raised from his sisters.

I would not breed these Brother-Sister as you already have some genetic faults going on that will breed forward. The combs , back angle, and squirrel tail

That's a really good idea about talking to the oldtime modern game breeders! I know a guy that hopefully will be coming up to the show here. If he does, you can bet I'll be chatting with him. I know the logical steps, but it would be good to talk about some of the nuance type stuff that comes along with them. I think for next year's breeding I'll be in a good place for hatching far more silvers than ever before, so of course I'm already impatient!
Vicki, In the fall will be going to a couple of shows where some of the all time great Modern breeders will hopefully be attending. Will verify my method and will bring it here after

Thanks, everyone! You guys are super helpful especially as you've all agreed on which to keep! haha Always much harder when there's a lot of disagreement. I'm also grateful to hear you back up my fumbling attempts to figure this out...I've seperated the first two cause I didn't like them so much and was planning on probably the third one, too, but didn't want him to get picked on. I'll just keep number five, then, and see if I can find a non-sibling roo to bring in and give my flock more genetic diversity. Thank you!!!

Would you be willing to post a close up? If you can get one, of course. I just don't see what every one else sees in these pictures. Everyone must have superman vision! LOL

I will, I think it would be useful for everyone. I sure didn't see what Don and Vicki were seeing in the photos, I had to handle the bird.

Took a few shots of my birchens that are my own project. These are two generations removed from the crap I started with. They look nothing like what I started with and know I have a long ways to go still, but am pleased with the major differences I'm seeing. I'll hold onto these until I see what sort of prospects I have from my other grow out pens and from those eggs I put into lockdown later tonight.

she's cropped in tight from a group shot, so I've lost the crispness on her...she really doe have a nice single comb, not the blob of pink you see haha

He's a split for gold, but has good heft and size on him. One serration on the second point of the comb, but I can deal with that after the mess I started with
