Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am posting today pics of the last two Black Copper Marans cockerels in my group. Tomorrow is butchering day, so hopefully the experts will chime in with opinions on these two. Here is BCM cockerel #17. I like him except I can't see what his tail is like, he is lower on the pecking order. I don't see any obvious faults. I like his color, I am partial to the deeper color than the lighter copper. What do you all think?

Here is the last one, BCM cockerel #48. This one is also lower on the pecking order. I think he is one of the younger ones. I think he doesn't have enough color, maybe he will color up, but I have others more mature that definitely look better. He doesn't look as beefy as the others, again may be age. The other thing that bothers me, and I need to catch him to determine, but does it look like he has a sprig on his comb blade, or is that just the way the comb is growing in? What do you all think? Keep or cull?

And just for grins, here is a group shot. I was able to get 10 out of the 11 BCM cockerels in the shot this morning around the feed bowl.

Hello everyone. Just wanted to share an update on the young chick that we were all guessing hen or roo..... looks like it is a pullet! At least that is the direction I am leaning.... they are really growing into some beauties. Just need more blues in the bunch!

Now just about 7 weeks old

(with flash.....)

blue roo for comparison (same age)

blue pullet for comparison....

Thank you dmrippy.....

Does he have some feathering between the toes?

He looks to be holding his wings funny or is he getting new ones in? Also on the 3rd picture from the bottom it looks like there are some white streaks on his chest closer to his throat- or is that just the way the picture shows?

Okay here is a somewhat better shot of our Blue Copper Marans cockeral he is coming up on 8 months old. He is very mellow and good sized but I don't like how his comb and tail look. Feed back is welcome- I'm thinking he is a cull.....

sorry the pictures aren't that clear- the kids were playing with the camera again.

I saw the Male before but didn't want to comment. The Comb should be a dq. The back and tail is just not there.

Quote: Hi Pinkchick,
The only person I know working with Columbian Marans ( same coloring as Light Sussex) is paintedbones. Lynnrae Troples in Pennsylvania. She been working wiht them for about 7 years now, at least. She has an art gallery page called Painted Bones. I think she can also be reached thru http://www.hpbaa.com website. Maybe others are also working on them but she is the only one I know of.
Best,
Karen
