Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Crazy! I don't really raise them- I have just about every color running together. One of my faverolles went missing and re-appeared with 10 chicks, and he was one of them.

Does that mean there could be Pene in their background, or is it something that pops up on occasion?

WHen hens are over melanized, which means they have a extra gene that masks the neck coloring, the hen may have a black feathered neck but still have the genes for the reddish -brown hackle colors genetically.

It would take some test crosses to determine which she is. THat is look at the ofspring to see if the hackle coloring is revealed.
Wow, Thanks, there's a lot to be learned, lol.

THere are anumber of clean legged breeders I 'm sure because the marans was only accepted into the APA about a year ago. Up until then many people enjoyed marans as wither clean legged or feather legged. I have clean legged cuckoos and I don't mind.
Thanks, I just want to make people happy if they buy. I very new to Marans and actually paying attention to different breeds. Years ago I raised chickens just for the eggs, and now I'm hooked on learning about them, well and the eggs are a plus :) lol

Well Mary got some of her Black Coppers,
We had a catastrophy with the shipping. We have gotten two stories so far one was they were unloaded from the plane and left out side at the airport. the 2nd was they missed their plane and were trucked from somewhere between NC and FL,
As it turned out only three arrived at Tampa alive out of eight and one passed last night. we were receiving 4 Jeane and 4 Davis line birds but now only have 2 Jeane ones left.
We will get pics later but for the next few days we are only concentrating on doing what we can to keep the two survivors going before we mess with them and try to take pics.

Mary is heart broken the one she thinks was a girl and her favorite passed,
The person we are getting them from offered to replace the lost birds for only the shipping cost but I wish there was some recource for the shipper as there was no need for these beautifull birds to go thrue such an ordeal!

Also for those that do ship dose FedEx ship birds? I know I use them for exotics but not sure if they do birds, I would feel soo much better the next time I have any shipped they come FedEx rather than standard overnight.

So it would be good to have either? Clean or Feathered ?
Well.... I breed to the SOP and I don't breed unless they have feathered legs, but clean legs still show up. Maybe eventually I will breed that out of them IDK

I have customers that DON'T want feathered legs. They think they are messy on the eggs.

So I have been doing some MAJOR cleaning, moving and today I sold or gave away (little roos) 65+ birds

Tomorrow more are coming for some roos and maybe my Cuckoo Pullets that are clean legged. He just wants them for layers. SOOOO Excited. That is the biggest exodus of birds I have ever had! There would have been more but my roo guy is not feeling well and didn't want the little roos so the first of the week I have another guy coming to get about 30 little bitty roos and a few pullets

I still have a lot of birds

I didn't know really how many I had, still don't

. In a couple of weeks I can cull my 3-4 week old chicks and thin them down.

The lady is coming next week to get the blue cuckoos and a golden cuckoo roo so that is about 8-9 more birds and gives me a new pen to use

I found 3 little Cuckoo roos with feathered legs and I think 3 pullets with feathered legs too so maybe I can find something to work with. I am only keeping 1 reg cuckoo pullet, but she has clean legs so still have some work.
