At this point......after shipping and broody walk off......I would totally leave them in the 'bator, get a hygro/thermometer and turn them 3 times a day. The less handling at this point, the better.Well- first time (after 11 weeks!!) broody quit this morning. 10 Eggs and off them for an hour. Barely made it 12 hours. Tried switching to the third backup "broody" but once again she backed out.... making it her fourth failed attempt to be a broody. I ended up putting them in the incubator- and now the first time broody is at it in the coop- looking for more eggs! She is certainly frustrating me.... now what do we do? I have never incubated eggs..... do I dare try on these beauties?!?!!!
Oh and I have to manually turn and have no hygrometer lol yeah..... been holding consistent temp for 5 days though.
That's too bad you lost another....sounds like you have about the same ratio going as I do with the silver marans chicks I have. I'm not gonna complain tho, its so much harder to get a good cockerel, so at least we have options right?WELCOME TO ALL THE NEW FOLKS!![]()
Hi EVERYBODY!!!!!![]()
Vicki~ Everytime I go out with the camera to snap photos of Darryl with her babies, she goes back into the coop. Of course when I am out there without the camera she is out side with them. ARGH!!!!!!
They are doing great and I am now down to 8 of them........no clue what happened to #9. Probably wandered off too far from Mamma whilst out playing in the big yard and got lost in the Blackberry Jungle, or an overhead predator got it (which I highly doubt as I don't have issues with the overhead birds, wandered off is my bet). Looks to be about 3 pullets and the rest are cockerels. Hope I am wrong.
Cad~ Eye color will change to perm. color around sexual maturity in both female and males.
Do you have photos of the light orange color you are speaking of?
sounds really good!Putting 7 of those "choices" in the freezer this week. LOL! Didn't make it to the auction last weekend, so might as well put that meat in the freezer for future dinners.
Marans meat marinated in Strawberry Salsa is the SH-TUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In one of our local little readers there was a recipe for fresh Strawberry Salsa and talk of marinating the meat. DH and I tried it.....WE ARE HOOKED!!!!!! I made Enchiladas out of the left over meat and it was DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!
