Debbi, I also think you have a young male here. Like the shank and toe feathering.

Me too! That is the Clyde influence coming into play with the shank/toe feathering. The pic is deceiving in that it looks more pink than it is, in reality, it is almost black to dark grey. Another cross x a cross so who knows what to expect? I can tell right now, whatever it is, it will be dark feathered. But at this age, it is a chunker, and should be a nice typey bird. All I pray for now is that the comb stays away from the you-know-whats!!!

Evenin everyone!

Don, I think the molting is finally starting on my blue copper girl! She's starting to lose the white feathers on the toes. She's also probably easily doubled in size over the last month, I keep having to do a double take, especially now that her tail is sitting at a nice angle as she is growing into herself. If she's in feather, I think I'll show her this fall, even tho she can't advance too far.

Sounds like they didn't get the fire under control yet, lookin like about 100,000 acres burned and said in the heat they are running out of fresh firemen to replace as they get too tired. I'm just praying they get it under control.
Also found out my mom's second cousin was one of the people wounded in the Theatre shooting. He's stable but has a shattered arm. If his arm hadn't have been there tho, it would have gone straight to his heart. I hope everyone is recovering well both physically and emotionally. That could not have been easy.

I'm new to this site and to the Marans breed and had a question. I just hatched out 4 Black Copper Marans chicks that are now 10 days old. 1 of them is starting to get copper on its wing feathers but the other 3 are not? does this by chance mean that its a Roo and the others are pullets or am I just being hopeful

Forgot this question:

If you are an NPIP tester, can you do your own chickens?? That seems kind of tainted to me if you can. Whose to say someone wouldn't fudge the results?? Sorry all, I am such a skeptic any more, and this all seems to be more or less of another gubberment intrusion to me.

Debbi, it seems there is a lot of state to state differences in the NPIP program. At my local poultry club, one guy who is a judge and has been around the chicken and show biz a lot longer than me told me some history for Arizona. Arizona, being a cattle raising state, back in the day used to allow people to test their own herds. I don't remember what he said changed that, probably some people weren't complying, so rules changed such that you weren't allowed to do testing on your own animals and somehow when it was rewritten, it now applied to all animals, poultry included. There was a well known poultry guy here, Leo Ewer, who used to test for people, but he died 2 years ago and now it seems there is no one doing it. I agree about being a skeptic when it comes to intrusion, but if you want to ship birds, what can you do?

At that age, I would suspect what you are seeing is "mossiness" or mossy feathering. Post a pic and we could help you better.

In PA, you pay by the bird to the technician for their time and supplies.

I'm having such a hard time getting anyone to come to the farm that I'm going to the class next spring.
In PA, you can test your own birds.

We have to test for AI and Pullorum for NPIP here.

I don't know....its been such a stressful last couple of months and seems like it just keeps piling on, but strange thing is that I'm calm and able to just plug away at what is at hand to do. trying to not over think things
