Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So I need some help. As I said, I put 2 of the roos up on craigslist. Someone just emailed me saying they want them. I have room right now for 2 roos. I have to make a hard choice. Which 2 should I keep?

Clown - if you're getting into chickens to make money, you're in the wrong business. You need to keep most breeds for so long before you know if they are "keepers" or not, the amount of feed & time you'll put in just won't pay off. Sorry, not trying to sound like a wet blanket. Unless you are showing, and consistently winning, I really doubt you'll break even. However, to have a hobby that you can make SOME money back on is awesome! consider raising up your culls and then dispatching for meat; they are large birds and make excellent table birds, in my opinion. If you cannot dispatch them yourself, find someone who will do it for you. There are several folks around here that you can take chickens to, and they "charge" 1 chicken per 5 processed, so there is not even money changing hands.

Extreme, that does not even appear to be a single comb to me - looks like a modified pea comb. Is this bird a purebred Marans?
It is a single comb, just not as big as my other roos for some reason, He is purebred.

Ugh! Storms 20 miles south of me with heavy rain. Storms to the north of me with scattered showers. Me, in the middle and nary a drop!! :he Don't know how much more of this we all can take!?? Next slight chance for rain is Monday...

Hello all..... I know there is an awful lot of talk about combs and such lately and I have a question regarding the only marans roo I have right now. He is about 9.5 weeks old. Of three roos, he was my favorite and is the only one I have not rehomed. Of course all the talk of combs, type, etc has me looking more in depth at my birds and wonder if he is worth keep - even for me, just a backyard breeder, not interested in showing. I want to have birds of somewhat good quality- not junk, as some have put it

Please tell me what you think of him so far......... and I know that I shouldn't count my chicks before they hatch- but I anticipate if any chicks hatch from what I have cooking now, I will have more roos to choose from.

Here is Smokey- the shy boy....... he is one of the lowest on the pecking order and quite shy. He usually has his back to me and looking over his shoulder at me. I personally like his quiet nature. He just goes with the flow, at the back of the flock.....

Please excuse the extra comb on his neck !!! LOL!

Sprig??

I have noticed a slight flop in the back side of his comb.... does this get progressively worse??

Thank you all for helping me learn!

I'm right there with you Debbi. They issues sever thunderstorm warnings for the northern part of the county I'm in, which is where I live and was watching it dump huuuuge amounts of rain just to the north and west of work and my place and it glided south and fizzled out. No rain here at all! What the heck!?

Gosh I cannot imagine have to deal with all that extreme weather. Guess I have lived in hawaii long enough for my memories to fade of mainland life. If it was not for reading all of your posts I would not even think of it being hot anywhere. lol
Makes me feel silly for complaining about an 85 degree day.
I hope all your animals are ok. Must be heartbreaking to see them suffering from the elements.
