Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

:woot :bow We had a surprise pop-up storm here today!! Rained really well for about 9 minutes! Didn't do much for the ground, but it sure lifted my spirits! Maybe we'll get some more to pop up unexpectedly now?? I'll take what we can get for sure!

Did it cool back down for you again Debbi?

Yes, the quick shower dropped the temps by about 10*, but as soon as the sun came back out, it was hot again and more humid. Did have a rather gusty wind come in, and tonight is feeling pretty good, it's 82* right now, inside and out.

Heck yeah! I sure hope we both get some more rain overnight and tomorrow. It got to about 88 today, and the girls finally stopped their weezing and their combs have reddened up again. But the temps are heading right back up again....back over 100 on Sunday, so its gonna be more rounds of watering and changing out frozen water bottles inbetween....feels like between that and work, it takes all day.

I know the feelong. Seems all I o is change out water all day long for chickens and dogs! I've drank more water in the last month, than I bet I have in the last year!!

Arielle - sorry to hear about your birds...that's really hard.
Sulmet or Corid should help

Someone (Vicki?) posted an electrolyte mix the other day - I'm not sure you can mix the electrolytes with the medication, though.
If they're not getting to the water under their own power, I'd spend your efforts on the medicated water.

Are they well enough to control their bodies?
Can you put them in a smaller box where water and food is always within beak range?

or, if they can't stay up on their keel, fashion a birdy sling with water available right at eye level?

LaughingClown - wow! You're a lucky man!
Enjoy each day as a gift!

Arielle, Yes, that is too bad, hope they pull through for you!! Does anyone know if you can French tube a chicken to get food/water into them? I've done it with dogs, lambs, goats, but never thought about chickens. That might be easier on them than having to get up and drink, but then again, the stress of the tube going down their throat may be counter productive as well. Any thoughts??

Thanks for the suggestions Cadeau and Debbi--I'm afraid I didn't catch the coccidia in time and the losses will be high. Lesson learned.

At least it is only one pen affected. Many thanks for that.

that would make it that much harder to just pop down to see you then! If you do move, don't think you'd get out of me visiting tho! haha

Well if I do move, I'll make you a deal. Bring me some Gigantor's boy's eggs, and I'll cook you a Nor-easter clam bake! Steamer clams, lobster, corn on the cob, and a huge salad! I found 3 very doable places today!! ;)

haha....or, just fresh fish and chips and a huge salad? I don't do clams....I can't handle the texture and I'd hate to see you watching me dry heave while you're trying to eat

Kind of like I hate the feel of things like velour....I don't know what it is! I'm weird I guess

That's awesome you are finding some awesome places....and Gigantor eggies could be arranged as well as perhaps Geronimo's (Gigantor's son)
