Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I plan to cull for it too. So far I have not seen it, but I have not really gone through my growout pens yet. Lets hope that little surprise is not waiting for me.

My hatch was only the 3 Cuckoos. I think 2 pullets and 1 possible roo. 2 with feathered legs.

They are very dark so hoping that means they really are lacking gold

I could not punch the toes, we got the tool out and I looked at those TINY feet and could not see enough web to punch

I just banded them BETTER than usually. Many layers of vetwrap.

Vicki I made my check list for DQ's and faults. I even printed out a sketch of the Marans for reference. Next I just need to make the time to EVALUATE them and take pics. I will start with my older ones first.... maybe I can work my way down to the younger ones. Maybe when we finish remodeling the master bedroom and bath hubby will give me a couple of days for chickens.

Sounds like a good plan Donna. Having a visual reference is invaluable and a listing of the faults and DQs is a really good idea. Eventually, the more you work with your birds and etc, you will get to the point that is becomes a natural part of how you see birds. Once you get to that point, you will never look at birds the same.

My Marans. Paris and Marseille, , 4 months old. This photo really captured their beautiful copper hue to their plumage, wouldn't you agree?

Love my gurls, even my penny hen.

Good morning all!

I got some reallllly good rains here yesterday!
bow.gif
First storm poured for almost 2 hours. Second storm came later that evening, and also poured for 1.5 hours! I swear the grass grew 2" overnight. Don't know what I was thinking when I didn't bring the Silkie pullet in the house before the rain! Of course, this morning she looks like a drowned rat, so now I have to give her a bath before I take her to the new owner!

She'll be glad to get rid of me after all of that, I quite sure.

The ground is finally soft enough now where I can dig down and clean out the mess in the pens. Look like that will be my weekend...

glad you got some more good rain lady. Hopefully it will make a visit here too before long.
Hope you can get your silkie girl all cleaned up and looking all squeaky clean for meeting her new owners. Still gonna take a cockerel to upsell? I always have extra when it comes time for people to buy. Always ends up with people asking if there are more to buy, so smart move on your part lady.

The plan today is to tackle some building on pens and some more sorting. Processing even just the 4 cockerels yesterday made such a huge difference in the run of the oldest chicks. I'm now down to 3 cockerels (1 more possibly will go) and 6 pullets from my first hatch of the year and the 7 black birchen girls. One of which slipped out of the pen a couple of weeks ago and has been broody on a batch of eggs. I'm expecting babies any day now. I also heard Marans babies coming from under another broody in another pen. I think all together I have 3 sussex, 3 sussex marans crosses (they are huge), 2 blue wyandotte chicks and at least 3 or 4 Marans chicks from the pen where Gigantor is. I've got to check them out here in a bit to see for sure. I was going to discourage them, but decided I'd see what they would produce.
