Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, that is DEFINITELY the wrong lady to combine with a U shaped boy. Her back is longer but she is very much U shaped herself.

(LOVE the feathered shanks on that girl!!!)
This hen sure looks like Pullet #2 and #4. I just do not see U-shape on this hen. Her back slope is a little messed up also. The hen will work with a male like I brought forward on the thread.

Which roo are you referring to? Do you have a pic. or a post # if he is already on this thread somewhere? In person (pics never seem quite accurate, all depends on the angle or the moment) most of this hens pullet offspring look almost identical to her even though the pics I posted don't show it...........

Hi Zanna
I think Don is talking about my 7 month old Cottage Hill/Skyline Poultry rooster, shown here.
Thanks, Lisa

I'm wondering if anyone on the forum would like to take a look at my young 7 month old French Black Copper Marans rooster, Oscar, and give me any comments regarding possible faults or DQs. He comes from Cottage Hill lines from James Meeks breedings. IMHO he stacks up pretty well against the French standard, at least as far as I can tell. There are no side sprigs on his comb (I wish it were a bit smaller and perhaps 1 or 2 points less), short toes, squirrel tails or white feathers. He has nice shank feathering I think and it looks to me like his coloring is correct. Please forgive the lack of hackle feather on the back of his neck, I think one of the hens gave him what-for and yanked some out as there is a definite "bald spot" where they should be. I've tried to get a nice standing picture of him to overlay the silhouette of the 45 degree angle of the perfect Marans, I think he's pretty close. I'm interested to know your thoughts!

Thanks, Lisa

Another question?
I have a lovely blue girl .... with light/white underfluff... is this the stuff you are talking about?
Should she be culled to the layer coop? or does the white not count on the blue birds?
I'll try and get a photo tonight.

Thanks
Patricia

Post the picture, Patricia. None of my blues are showing white underfluff. Would like to know if what you are seeing is just light blue or truly white. (By any chance, is this one of the birds you are planning to bring to Woodstock? It is SO much more meaningful to discuss the birds in the flesh. Plus, we might be able to pin down one of the judges after judging and ask them for their opinion. There are some quality judges booked for this show so we should get some very useful guidance - if we can corner them!)
