Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback. Keep it coming! The red band guy is just a stinker. He has been since he was little. He'll let me pick him up, but not until we've had a huge game of chase. What bothers me most is that when I feed him, he twists and snatches. It hurts! Brought blood once! I don't think it's intentional-just how he is.

Geebs, thanks for the PM. I'll get some side more pics up soon of the sides! You are so knowlegeable when it comes to this breed. I wish you lived here so you could look them all over closely for me!

Well, here's Dino at about 5-6 months. He's the biggest chicken Ive ever had. Unfortunately, I can't keep him. He has a little bit of a wry tail, and thats a deal breaker for me. So Ill find a home for him. But sheesh, he's a big big boy!!

Julie -

I too, would get rid of the roo with the bad personality. They just get worse when the hormones set in! I like the dark coloring on #2, too. If you've got the space, I would suggest keeping the three nice boys for a while longer. You'll be better able to tell when they are grown.

Thanks. He still looks pretty dinosaur-ish to me. Im growing out 2 wheatens that I think Im going to keep, so Im going to get rid of him. Tho he is trying to breed some of the hens. He's out with about 50 girls, so its doubtful he's ever bred my 5 wheaten girls. If I catch him breeding them, maybe Ill try to incubate some eggs, just for grins.

Breeding a Black Copper or Blue Copper to a solid black or blue hen or visa versa will give you blue and black babies but they will not be pure black copper or blue copper or solids. They will be mixed if you will, but still pure Marans of course only if they lay an egg that qualifies. They would not feather out correctly to be considered a certain color variety of Marans. A person can make the blue and black coppers this way but it would take several generations to breed out any unwanted traits. The amount of copper that the chicks will have will depend on how much copper the parents have to contribute.

This is the way it works but it seems to me a person has to set a large number of eggs not sure how many....I wouldn't think that these percentages would be the same out of a small hatch.

Blue x Blue =25% Black, 25% Splash and 50% Blue
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash
Blue x Splash 50% Blue , 50% Splash
Splash x Black = 100% Blue
Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black x Black =100% Black

Hope this helps!

What if you cross a wheaten and a black copper?? What do you get?

Got another one of those weird eggs, this one almost white with the matt or powdered coating. I have got to figure out which one is doing it and cull or figure out why.

Ooooo Marty is pretty!

And while I know that odd egg of yours is nothing like a Marans' should be - it is strangely pretty. Once you figure out who it is, you might move her to a layer pen for interesting eggs!

AHappyChick~~~~~~ Don't cull her, wait give her some time ....this should run its course with her and is not a fault. It is just an extra heavy coating that does not effect anything....although I have found it very difficult to hatch any of these eggs.

BTW.......
