I have a broody Marans, as well. She is sitting on Delaware eggs.

Happychick...Marty sounds like an awesome roo. I love it when breeders talk about their birds like this.., it's shows that they are not just breeding for egg color and type, but temperament. I have several girls I just love....but a couple of roo's have a special place in my heart

Incubators are empty? Just letting the broody have at it then?

It is so much easier letting the girls do the work

I have 4 that have gone broody . I don't want to put eggs under all of them-don't have a wire bottom cage to put them in
to break them, don't have enough pen space to isolate them, hate to take newly hatched babies away from them....
.
Will they give up before they starve to death?

Drom and Iliia... Awesome pix: Do we have some Gender bending going on in the coup??? A hen named Dave and a rooster named Maple... HMMMMM

And Wow...I didn't know that about the marans SOP and the 20 percent.. thanks for posting that!!! I will watch out for the bohemiths (sp?) in my flock. I wouldn't turn down an itty bitty though... SOP or not... I would love a bantam or two!!!

Gosh I'm just the opposite. I just don't really like bantams. . . Those bugged eyes, tiny baby faces, and squat little legs. . . I like my chickens normal sized or huge.

I wouldn't mind if I had some roosters over the SOP weight, just as long as they didn't pass it on too much or weren't used for quality Marans breeding. (instead, for meat or olive egger production - I'd love to have a meaty Marans grow huge and somewhat fast

I will tell you a secret ..... It ain't happenin' ..... They are gonna be full within a week! I just can not eat all these Lavender Orp eggs! I'm gonna save them for a week (after I send out this test batch Monday), along with some Jersey Giants, and Delawares, and toss them all in the bator!

About your broodies ..... I was able to break a broody last fall. It took about 3 days of work! I took her off the nest about evry couple hours. I dunked her butt in a tub of water each time. On the third day, I gave up. I just took her and put her in a nice new clean nest (kitty litter pan) with fresh eggs, in the little 4'x4' storage area of the coop. And that did it .... she decided she did not want to be broody!

Love your broody!

I don't use my big guy for breeding unless I want to contribute his assests (his temperment in particular....he's just a big push over) to some offspring and yes his size does pass on easily to his babies, a couple of his daughters that I have kept have been huge from the get go......they are in the laying flock and almost 5 mos old now. He throws some beautiful dark blue no copper babies and they are very friendly and curious just like their daddy.
By the way....Bill weighed in last night at 12.9 lbs. I just knew when I picked him up he weighed more than a 10lb sack of potatoes.....guess I was off my 14 lb guesstimate, but he is still a big boy.

My Copper Splash roo weighed in at 10 lbs and my Blue Copper roo that is in the breeding pen is coming in at 10 lbs as well. Uffda......they still have a little maturing to do, they are only 10 mos old.
