Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

I hatched 12 Cuckoo Maran chicks and kept 2. They are now 3 weeks old. I let my older ones see them and they don't like one of the chicks. All of my roosters would try to pick on it (I wouldn't let them) but they left the other one alone. Does that mean it's a rooster? And what Marans lay the really dark eggs? Thanks

OK all, I have a genetics question. Which would be best to do. I have some blue splash marans that do not have feathered legs. I want to change this so.... I have two roosters to pick from. One is a Black Copper Wade Jeanne roo, the other a Bev Davis Blue Copper roo. Both are really nice quality roos, but which one would work best to get me the feather legged splashes. These are all very young birds.

Well, I don't have any pictures of my eggs, chicks, or chickens in the Maran variety... yet. I'm here hoping someone here can direct me to a reliable source for french black copper marans hatching eggs. I'm hoping for birds that will produce a very dark egg and don't particularly care very much about the feathering as they would mostly be for pets, not breeding/showing. Any help locating such a source would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, friends! Some of you know that I've been really working hard on increasing hatchability. My last several batches of shipped eggs have hatched really well, and I received this comment last week that I wanted to share, because I'm just ecstatic that I'm on the right track!

Out of 23 [French Black Copper Marans hatching] eggs, 3 were clear, 1 quit about day 5 and 1 quit about day 10, 18 hatched completely unassisted. It was textbook. Everyone single one is perfect. I am beyond happy! Especially after my last batch I got from a guy in XXXXXX. Hatched 11 out of 21, One with fused toes, one with no eyes, and a crossbeak. Only 4 of them are feather legged. 4 of the hens are mossy and 2 of those are so bad they look more brown than black. The only roo that has a 5 point comb was the fused toe beast. They are all going to freezer camp.

Hi all,

Funny question here. I haven't had any type of chicken for about 18 years now, so my memory may be off. Came home from the store the other day, and walk in to see all 4 of the chicks lying flat out on the bellies, beaks extended, and one leg stretched out behind them! I must of let out an audible gasp and they all jumped to their feet. Gees, I thought they were all dead! LOL. I don't ever recall seeing any chick or adult chicken do this before, but like I said, my memory may have slipped. Is this a typical Marans (or in my case maybe) thing?? They are all doing great. Some moths got in the door the other night, and they were flying into the brooder and being promptly eaten by my little ones! All are sprouting wings and tails, and one, the first born, is trying to fly to the top of the brooder. Put an end to that with a lid! Wish I could get a pic of this lying posture, it sure is cute, and I've seen them do it several times since. Any one else's do this?

Ahhh phew! Glad to hear that. Guess I never had time to watch the chicks much in my younger days, with working and hauling kids to and fro! Sure scared the tar outta me!
