March 2017! Hatch with us!

Mottled: adorable Splash: ridiculously cute Spangled: off the charts darling Orpington: about as fluffy as they come I'm pretty sure those are the APA definitions... :D
:gig :thumbsup
The white chick appeared again. The only thing I can figure is it was sleeping under the other broody.
:ya good going Waldo!
Ok, since you asked ... ;) Guess what?? I left the incubator for a bit, came back and there was a new bird! And another! I had to call my daughter for another pair of eyes, because I could only see one more egg cracked open. We even got out our checklist and checked off every bird that had hatched and compared this with eggs still left. None of it made any sense. Where did this other bird come from? I opened the incubator and confirmed that the other eggs were either whole or pipped with a beak sticking out. So, the "Meg" egg gave me twin Easter Eggers!!
Are you serious? That's awesome! :love

The eggs were labeled "Blue Black Splash Spangled/Mottled." What does this mean?? All I see is cute.

Mottled birds have white on the tip of some individual feathers. Spangled is similar, but I think technically spangled have another color involved, like a black feather, white and red tipped, etc. Someone correct me on the spangled.

I do know that mottled must receive the gene from both parents to show it, but they can be a carrier if they get it from one parent and don't show it.

Call duckies got their first bath today. :)

That is AMAZING! You are the first one I"ve ever heard had twins hatch successfully all by themselves. They are some strong determined little chickies!!! Congratulations!

Well, I was serious, but the chickies pulled a prank on me!

I retract my post, and humbly admit I've been the naive victim of an early April Fool's joke. One of my chicks seems to have pipped and zipped on the underside of the egg and slipped out while I wasn't in the room, making sure her egg looked perfectly intact from the top view. When I went to clear out the incubator, I discovered my silly mistake. No twins! This makes a lot more sense. I couldn't figure out how two big chicks had come out of that one egg.

Well, every one of my chicks made it under the wire for the March hatch. I had to assist the last one, who had pipped 24 hours earlier and couldn't make any progress. I was really surprised to see that the baby from the Marans egg was not a BCM, but appears to be a little lavender chick! My last EE has some striking colouring, which is nice, since I can barely tell the other three apart, and they look so much like the Olive Egger.

Do Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers actually look different in any distinct way?

Anyway, 9 out of the 9 in lockdown is a great hatch, and I am super happy. Only 1 of the 10 eggs never developed and didn't go into lockdown. Considering I only ordered and paid for 5 eggs from Papa's, I am quite overwhelmed with the bounty of chicks. My son is visiting, so I get to sleep in the brooder room, no excuse needed.

This wraps my March hatch, but I'll put some pics up tomorrow, and I can't wait to see more chickie and duckie pics from all my hatch-a-long pals. This has been such a great group of people, and I'd love to come back to this thread to visit now and again, and see how the chicks have grown.

Goodnight, all!

LOL now that is MUCH better than what I did.....

I just finished a hatch on Monday, and they were still hatching when I locked down this hatch. I left the eggs in the Monday bator - just in case I had a late hatch., but I stole the humidity pump for the new hatch.

After the clean up of viable eggs this morning, I had to help one of the Seramas hatch when I got home from work. It's doing great, already in with the rest of the crowd.

As I was going to bed, I went to check and I hear peeping. Loud peeping. I opened up the bator since I didn't see any pips. Nothing. The noise was coming from the MONDAY hatch bator. NO WATER SINCE TUESDAY!!! It was STUCK. I had to PEEELLLLL the shell off that baby. It's now all alone drying off inside the 'bator. It was ONLY wet because I was adding water to my peeling of the shell. Other than that, it's body was dry.

Final count for me is 9 bantam EE, 4 Serama and 4 Olive Egger. Unless my life check on the eggs in the bator was totally wrong. I obviously was wrong about Monday's hatch.

I've got more eggs on day 15 and even MORE eggs on day 7. Then I'm done for a while.....LOTS of babies!!!

These are not part of the super-cute chick series. These are "What's up with the huge feet??" pics. Here are two just-hatched Easter Eggers. The fluffy black/grey one is Amy. The damp one is Beth, or perhaps I should call her Sasquatch. Beth karate-kicked out of the egg with lightning speed, courtesy of those enormous feet. How can this be? The chick is not bigger, just the feet. Can you see this, too? They almost look swollen. Should I be concerned?
Well, first congrats! They are beautiful! And yes they have some very big feet! Amy's don't look swollen to my eye but I believe I see whT I'd think is puffiness where her toes connect to her foot. I'm a novice so I don't know how to interpret this. I hope you get replies from the experts
