March 2017! Hatch with us!

Are the silkies like that hard to raise? I might get interested in some as cute as they are

Not any harder than any other chicken. They are really only good as lawn ornaments and as mothers. They are cute and fluffy and usually friendly. I only have the one silkie and then I have two showgirls, which are naked neck silkies. Even the rooster is friendly. Like Jessimom said, they are easy targets for predators. Not the brightest chickens, don't have the best vision because of the fluff, and they move slow. I keep mine in a covered dog kennel. I had to put up some bird netting too because a hawk found it's way in the opening in the rain roof and killed my other silkie plus a few chicks I had growing out in there. I love them though.

I also see you are in Georgia like me. You need to be careful with the heat in summer. I lost two last summer to the heat. They need lots of shade, lots of cool water, and maybe even a fan if you can provide it.

I had one crawl in through a flaw in the coop and got stuck. My brother got great photos while removing him.

That I have I have all my birds under part shade trees have 2 exhaust fans already and plenty of fresh well water for them it's always nice and cold but that's why I didn't want as many at first I hate to loose one because of my ignorance. But I have to say I like ypurs they cute and if my wife has her way they would probibly be in the ac and me outside lil

Oh man. We caught the one in our coop too, but we did not touch it. Lol. I wouldn't want to be bit by that beak. We let it go. I thought my husband gave it a heart attack when he was trying to get it to go under the coop to get out. It just fell over and laid still. After we walked away a bit, it took off flying. It was so funny, despite it being a jerk and killing my birds. Luckily the four chicks it killed were all roosters and were going to go in the pot eventually anyway.

I'll have to check on some for her lol she likes the smaller birds and adores your puff ball[/qoute]

I'd offer you some eggs, but mine are silkie and showgirls, so you would get half silkie and half showgirl. Though now that my silkie is broody, I guess they'd be all showgirl... I don't know. However the genetics work. Lol.
