March 2017! Hatch with us!

I have 9(?) mystery chicks to hatch on Saturday. My CLB hen was impatient to start. I say 9(?) because I have a Brahma hen that continues to climb on the CLB and lay an egg on her back. I am hoping my vigilance has paid off.

Best of luck!!

My chocolate orp broody is in the middle of hatching hers. They started 2 days ago, 6 are out, 5 eggs left. She took contributions from the other girls for several days, before I got a divider put up to keep them away from her. By the time I got to check and count eggs, she had 19! I removed some eggs that I could tell were very recently added, then removed some more that were developmentally behind, but her hatch is dragging out because of it. I just hope those last ones hatch.

Some of you that have dealt with broodies may find this interesting... This morning when I went to check on them, as soon as I opened the nest box lid, she stood up and jumped out! 5 chicks, plus one freshly hatched, plus 5 more eggs left behind. I was thinking she had lost her mind! She clucked around for a minute or two, squatted and took a humongous broody-poop! The chicks are chirping away at this point, and I'm worried about the freshly hatched, semi-dry one! But right after she pooped, she walked back up into the coop and waited for me to lift her over the temporary divider, and snuggled right back on the chicks and eggs. I guess where it is dragging out so long, she just couldn't hold it any longer!

Chickens are so odd sometimes! :gig I hope you and your CLB hen end up with a great hatch!

My young Silkie is not sitting on her possibly fertile eggs, so I am putting all four that she's laid so far in the incubator with the LF that are due to hatch this week. Thanks for the advice on this.

Yesterday, I re-homed two Brahma cockerels, and last weekend I gave up a gorgeous Silkie pair, so there will be plenty of room for more hens. Yes, Chicken Math does involve subtraction, as well as addition.

So excited for new chicks by Friday!

I can only CONFIRM 1 live chick in the pile of broodies, but they won't let me check for eggs. It appears that my family has added a few brooders to the pile, clearing out the other favorite nesting box. So, we are back up to 7 broodies, in this pile. But the other nesting box just filled back up = there are at least 5 broodies in it now. The pile with the fertile eggs want NOTHING to do with me lifting them up. I keep finding that 1 chick in between birds, under nobody. It's staying plenty warm, without being crushed. It's head keeps popping up, looking around.

For my incubator - I left my house around 7 last night with 3 chicks in the 'bator, but LOT of pips. I stayed at my friend's place, and the message I got this morning is that there are 13 or 14, it's hard to count. Not a chance I could get anyone to attempt to figure out which eggs have been hatching.

I have to work all day - maybe run home at lunch????? 20 min home, 20 min playing with chicks, 20 min back? I should stop for gas sometime in that hour as well.....

Tomorrow is lockdown for my next set of eggs. I did not plan that batch well at all. I hate hatching mid-week.

Happy Hatching everyone!!!!

I want those so badly! They have been on my wish list since I first got chickens. Had some eggs once, none hatched. Now I don't have a free pen and I keep putting them off. But I will have some one day!
I work in reverse a lot.... new birds? Well, I best be building a new coop!!

Hahaha! Yep, that is me. New coop in progress for the Bielefelder eggs that are in my incubator now. :D
