C'mon little chickies.... Pip those shells!!

That is so adorable. Poor girls on infertile eggs. I thought you were going to give them some fertile ones?

And ya know how women always go to the restroom in pairs or groups? I guess we get it from the chickens.

(the black on in the box is the newly broody one, for the past 3 or 4 days)
Awesome photo. So, the black one was in the box and the grey one is squeezing in?

No, this box is not secure, so there would be too many eggs that get added . If I were to secure any further locations in this coop, there would be some VERY unhappy birds. I tried putting 1 in with the other broodies, but they wanted no part of that.

Plus I no longer have a source of fertile eggs of my own - I'd have to give them shipped eggs. Maybe NEXT year, after these hens with chicks, successfully raise them, I'll risk shipped eggs out there.

I gave in and bought two, week and a half old chicks for Georgie. The guys gave me a deal and they were only $2 each. I forget what breed he said besides one was a Belvidere or something, so if you recognize them, let me know. Anyway, they are all getting along well and Georgie is being quieter. I did try to put another silkie chick in with Georgie, but she/he was beating it up, so I took it out. Which led me to buying the bigger chicks.

Ok, so I tried to get the eggs from under the broodies. I got 8 and I have bloody hands. There is still 3 eggs that I can see. I'm hoping they kick them out. I threw some food into the coop and some of the moms got up, but 3 stayed behind. They currently have the 2 chicks they hatched, plus 4 RIR chicks. Here are the 2 bravest chicks with the big girls. It's blurry, but they didn't want to stay still. I couldn't find the black silkie chick this morning, but I wasn't back there very long. And here is the consolation prize broodies - they have no fertile eggs, and no possibility of getting any chicks. They are hogging the favorite nesting area. I'm guessing a minimum of 4 maybe 5 birds in here.
Adorable babies and moms!

Very cute. I'm glad that little Georgie has company.

They say a watched pot never boils. I think a watched egg never pips. *sigh* I had better leave the incubator alone and go clean the attic.

:lau I was watching one day...even using a magnifying glass, and one pipped right then and there! It was cool. The attic can wait. :D

The black one has been acting broody for a few days now, but I have been taking the eggs. When I took them today, she got up and went out for a poop, a bite, and a drink. When she came back, I had sat one egg in that box because my hands were full, and she got on it. Then the mauve wanted to lay there, so she climbed in with her. Where the chocolate is standing is where the black one has been sitting. After the chocolate and mauve left, the black one moved out of the box too. Oh the life of the hens. :D

It worked!!!! I told my daughter what you said, and she asked, "Are you really going to do that?" Yes! I said, and headed for the incubator with a flashlight.

I started "chook-chooking" at the eggs, and right before my eyes, one of the Orpingtons pipped! And peeped!

I am so glad I didn't miss that. The attic can wait. You are the best!

Another pip! While the splash Orpington is resting, the Jubilee Orp chick next door is shouting and busting through the shell. It is so cute to see the little beak cheeping away! An Easter Egger has pipped, too. I won't sleep much tonight.
