March 2018 Hatch-a-long

Congratulations on your hatch, what was the final count and what did you set your humidity, i am trying dry incubation , usually 33 to 40 hoping this works, last hatch was 45 to 55 degrees and the hatch was awful.

Woke up to check progress. We are up to 7 little early jail breakers!! One buff orpington/Black Copper Marans, and six Olive Eggers. Everybody is calm and sleeping in the dark-when I turned the light on there was a lot of bumbling around. Two more pips that I could see, one Black Copper Marans and the other Orp mix. We have 4 EE, 10 BCM and 1 Orpington left to hatch.

Hi!

I want to share my hatching video. We had 19/21 fertile eggs hatch. It was my first time incubating and it was a blast. We loved every second of it.

We tried to hatch two eggs under our broody hen, Louise, but she never took them in.

One chick had trouble with its hatch so we assisted it, placed him back in the incubator and named him Sticky after that.

Every time we came home to my house, we always greeted the eggs by saying, "Hi eggies!" We've gotten so used to it, that now it feels weird not saying it since the chicks have hatched. Guess now, we'll have to switch to "Hi chickies!"

Well I candled my eggs today since it is day 11 and day 12 for my eggs. The eggs I got shipped ,I chose first to candle because they are lighter shell coloration and that was a good starting point. Out of 8 eggs there were 3 fertile eggs, 4 un-fertile eggs and one egg with a blood ring. My other eggs that are on day 12 are brown shell and they were a little trickier. I picked them up locally and so far all 7 looks fertile, so we shall see:fl

day 14-15 on one egg, momma hen is sitting on it. She had been broody for a while. I left her in the nest box she chose, with a little board propped up against the opening. If she wants out she can knock down the board, eat, get her water leave droppings and come back to her nest, then I can prop up the little board again and she gets her privacy from the other birds. She is so happy to have an egg though.

My other eggs are on day 2.

Hatch tonight (day 20) ended with 9/10 Easter Eggers, 2/2 Orpington/Marans cross (most adorable little red-brown chick you’ve ever seen!!!) and 5/10 healthy Marans babies. We had one hatch that is just struggling-hatched all gooey and covered in egg white. It can’t stand up straight, it flips backwards and ends up completely upside down, flailing away. I tried making a little nest for it but it’s so spastic it didn’t stay put. Gave it some chick vitamin-probiotic-electrolyte mix, and hoping there is improvement tomorrow. :/ There are 3 Marans eggs still in the incubator. One appears to be deceased, the other two are rocking and rolling. Also one more OE egg. No action, it’s just sitting there. ‍♀️
