MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

21 days is just a base, some chicks hatch early because the egg may have been under a hen longer than another egg, or one egg could have been stored longer.

Some people see a pip on day 19 and get excited "egg is hatching!" which is true, but
the zip may not happen until 12-24 hrs later.

The original pictured egg is still Not hatched, looking about the same if not a teensy bit more zipped. I however have 1 completely hatched chick & another egg pipped.

When counting hatching days I count the first set day as a 0.

Yes I do the same.

I would trust your thermometer in the the incubator for sure, and not just what the digital one says on the incubator. I have adjusted my incubator temp to make sure the one in the incubator has the right temp.
I think with my duck hatch I will adjust my incubator to match the external/separate thermometer. I had the same thing happen last hatch so now I am confident my incubator is the issue.

Just hatched 12 Splash and Blue Australorp on the 10th of this month. Got 6 Blue 6 Splash.

Candled my day 12 shipped eggs...the 55 flowery are the best subjects pure white and massive ! Air cells are a bit wonky due to detachment from shipping. All intact now...a few are a bit bigger than I’d like but most look normal for this day.

These eggs have developed quite interestingly I’m excited/nervous to see how they hatch

Woke up to this - they did all the work while I tried to catch some Zzzzzs.

That's ten successful hatchings so far, an 11th that's externally pipped, and #12 was a quit. Thus ends my March hatchings. Will start again soon for April, likely tomorrow after things are clean and sanitized.

/edit #11 is hatched

Still debating between another thing of chickens, or doing a hatching of ducks.

These guys made it to lock down. (One has a pip above) The eggs were from a guys fridge, he was selling them off his porch at the coldest time of year when I got them. I don't know how he handles his eggs, and he only sells them to eat. He does have roosters. That was about it. I tried to hatch his eggs last year, and didn't get one to hatch. This year one did. Below "Bug" is in front of 2 painted rocks. Barnyard mix with feathered feet.

This chick will have to wait for the others to hatch on the 29th... I may have a small chick from an earlier hatch I can combine, unless I want to grab chicks from North 40, or buy one from another person who hatches.
