So far, only my bantams have hatched in the incubator except for 1 barnie and 1 EE. The LF eggs under the broody hatched yesterday, but except for those 2 that have hatched, none of the LF eggs in the bator have even so much as pipped. We did have that issue early on in the first couple of days that affected mostly the LF eggs, so I'm hoping they're just delayed. They all candled well at lockdown except for 2 FBCM eggs that I couldn't see into AT ALL and 1 barnie egg that I wasn't too sure about. Well apparently the barnie egg was okay because it's the only one of 4 barnies that made it into lockdown that has hatched! I have 5 EEs, 4 FBCMs, and 3 barnies that haven't done anything yet.

I am gonna move all the banties out today into their brooder. Some of them are a day and a half old now.

Boy, hatching sure is fun!

Candled eggs last night.
In Incubator 1, I originally set 42 eggs, took 1 out at a week and took 1 out last night, so now I have 40 in there that are set to hatch Sunday March 20th

In Incubator 2, I originally set 36 eggs, took 6 out last night that were not developing, 4 were shipped RIR eggs and 2 were OEGB BBR from my mom. These are set to hatch march 25th

I also had a hen go broody and I couldn't break her so I decided to just put her in a pen by herself and let her sit on some eggs. If she is just gonna steal eggs from the other hens, especially eggs that aren't fertile and sit on them I might as put some under her that will actually do something.

We're on day 11 of our first hatch. 21 days never took this long before.
I tried candling some of them but the FCBM eggs were just too dark. I hate not knowing any details...

My hatch has been going well over the weekend. I have six light Brahma and three dark Brahma chicks out. Two more eggs had pipped before I had to leave for work, one dark and one buff!

I officially ended our hatch last night. This way my first hatch, so I was in for a big surprise at the mess those little boogers make inside the incubator!

I did almost have a loss. A chick was trying to hatch from it's shell for 48 hours. I decided to step in and help out a little. After opening the egg a bit more I placed it back in the incubator so it could get out on it's own. Hours later he was still pushing and trying to get out, but was not making much progress. I took it out again and this time worked slowly at removing the whole shell. Turns out it was stuck to him pretty good in some spots. Once out I placed him back into the incubator again. He didn't look well at all and had some kind of big mass of green and white mixed stuff on his bottom. His head was also tilted funny and it looked like his wing was not right either.

I was devastated. I couldn't stop checking on him and everytime I did I felt horrible for him. I'm sure it doesn't help that I'm 32 weeks pregnant and full of hormones!

I put him in the brooder with the rest of the chicks yesterday and last night I worked on removing the mass. I was afraid to mess with it, but more afraid that if it was removable and I didn't that he would end up dying because of it. I worked at it with warm water and q-tips and within about 20 minutes it all came off!

Other than the fact that he is still a little sticky looking and not very fluffy like the others, he's running around, eating, drinking, and cuddling with all of the other chicks. I could try and wipe him down a bit, but until we find homes for the rest of the buff orpingtons we're not keeping I'd rather be able to tell the difference since he's the only Buff Oprington out of the bunch we will be keeping.

I ended up hatching out 6 French Black Copper Marans, 8 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Blue Orpingtons, and 1 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. Not too bad for my first time! I just set 6 more Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas and 4 Silkies today. This hatching business is addicting!

We're calling him Adonis, so he'd better be a male, LOL. Ladyhawk really wants another son of Suede and I'm going to do everthing in my power to get her one. When my eggs arrive for the big hatch, I'm going to add some more of Smoky's eggs in the bunch, just in case they're still fertile. That is, if I have room in the two bators--this hatch is growing by leaps and bounds, as they tend to do. Congrats on the new Brahmas!

So far I have the following:

43 due on the 6th got 35 hatched...81%
45 due on the 13th got 36 hatched...80%
63 due onthe 16th
70 due on the 20th
25 due on the 24th
49 due on the 30th

This gives me at total so far of 295 for March...
So far we are at a hatch rate of 71 of 88 so 81%...we must do better than that...

DAY 22..45 are done and out, we got... 8 LF SL Cochin, 11 RIR/BSL, 1 DELX and 25 'OE's....might be a few bantam crosses in there. 3 LF Silver Laced Cochin Hatched ,6 RIR/BSL hatched, 25 hatched 'OE's, for a total of 36. DONE

DAY 18 ... 63 in lockdown. 44 'OE' and 19 mixture of shipped eggs
