March Hatch A Long... anyone with me??

Hey, I live north of Covington in Bush...everyone around here seems to know it as the place where the House of Seafood is located. We also are about 25 minutes from Slidell up 41: It is nice to know a fellow BYC'er is in the neighborhood. My husband and I drove over to Bay St. Louis after Katrina and that entire area was completely devestated: I had never seen anything like it...even the lower 9th ward didn't compare. Did you live there then?

Anyway, yes, it is David. I have been emailing him...it is easier for me since I have lousy cell and home phone service. I'll PM you his phone and email in a few minutes. It is closer for us to go through Poplarville...is that a bad idea? We don't mind bumpy back roads (never know what you will find), but if their is some reason we should avoid this route, please let me know.

Yes I lived in Lakeshore, before and after Katrina. She actually made landfall just a few miles from us,over the mouth of the Pearl River between Pearlington and Clermont harbor. It still upsets all of us that New Orleans publicly got the worst hit while we physically got it. Theirs was man made ours natural...with a 35+ft tidal surge.I lived 6 miles from the beach and we got more than 12 ft of water. We were actually here during the storm. We came out to find horses in second story homes my boys pony was in the powerlines, cows washed out on the beach...None of us were able to take pictures because most of our homes were gone. And no one even attempted to come in with help for almost a week afterwards. Therefore what little documentation we have is after a few weeks when we were let back in once we got out.
Anyway,No poplarville isn't a bad idea, just a LOOnnggg ride..lol...one of those ones that seem to last forever cause it's so boring...lol...Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll contact him and try to ride up this weekiend.

Couldn't agree more about the post-Katrina thing...guess people stranded on rooftops makes better news than people with no houses at all (it looked like a giant hand just swept everything away and deposited it somewhere else): Very sad. I can't even imagine seeing what you guys did....everybody's homes and belongings and all those poor animals....makes me want to cry.
Glad you have everything back on track now and let's just hope we have many hurricane free years to come. As to the drive....I like boring...it's why I moved to the middle of nowhere. Well, that and nobody can tell me how many chickens...goats, horses, cows, etc I am allowed to have, so I can buy as many critters as 6.5 acres can support! If you decide to scoot up to see Mr. David...I am shooting for around 1pm Sunday. He gave me first dibs since I contacted him in December, but as long as I take home 16 eggs +/- I'll be happy and he said he had more than 24: I'm not too greedy.

You should change the title to look more like my old February hatch, so it fits in nice like a train of hatching.

Anyway, I'm collecting eggs for a March hatch, but so far not setting any. . . Low production lately.

I've got some Blue Wheaten Ameraucana eggs, Black Copper Marans eggs, and ONE Shamo egg waiting to be set.

I've got only one girl so far I'm using for OE's, and I'm collecting her first 6 or so for myself. Otherwise, the Ameraucanas I was using are now being used for EE's.

The fact that I've gotten 4 new layers in just a week though gives me good hopes for new girls starting up soon.

Production is pretty poor, but getting better as time goes on.

OK why can I picture you deconstructing your cabinet doors to put chicken wire on the fronts to have different compartments for growing out chicks until they are big enough to go into the "ginormous brooder" outside? Oh yeah, I can so see this in my head!

What is really disturbing is I CAN SEE IT TOO!

I rent this house. Probably shouldn't deconstruct the kitchen cabinets, but on Freecycle, I did see a six shelf, wooden bookcase... Bet I could use THAT!

Wait! Wait! I can go to the local Goodwill Store and look for wooden bookcases, without having to deal with strangers on Freecycle. That bookcase is probably gone, now, anyway.

You all know how to make me giggle!

I DID stop by the Goodwill Store on my way home from work this evening. Several likely pieces of furniture, but there's a dresser that's really calling my name. I could take out the top two drawers and put hardware cloth across the front, cut a hole through the back for the heat lamp power cord, hang the heat lamp off a hook on the inside of the top (adjusting the height as necessary), and just pull out the bottom drawer to access the chicks.

Plus, I could put a roost in there, too, for training purposes. The drawer is deep enough front to back, wide enough, and its depth is nice, too.

I may go back and pick it up tomorrow. Gonna need some sticky shelf liner for the bottom and sides of the drawer... < *thinking* >

Picking up a dozen Delaware eggs and a dozen Black/Lav. Split Ameraucana eggs Friday the 18th from local breeders. Will probably also set a few of my own "farmyard mix" NH Roo, WL Roo, WL Hens and Production Red Hen cross eggs to fill up the 42 slots in the incubator. Should have some great egglayers from my possible cross combos. So, looking for a hatching date around the 11th.........
