March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

What to do now?

Went to the grocery store earlier today. When I came home my hubby confessed to trying to "help" a chick hatch because he thought it had been pipped too long. He cracked the area around the air cell. One of the shell fragments tore the inner membrane a little bit, and it started bleeding. He immediately put it back in the incubator and has since left it alone. Yes, he now knows that when I say that they just need to be left alone, they really do just need to be left alone. Poor guy feels super bad. However, the chick is still alive (several hours later). Looking at it, I am wondering if it is starting to get shrink wrapped with all of the exposure to the air it has. Here is a photo. What do you guys think?

I also have another chick that pipped the wrong end. It looks like it hit a blood vessel when it did. It too, is still alive. Looks like the blood has been absorbed quite a bit. Didn't notice that it had pipped the wrong end until doing a mid-hatch incubator clean out. Have no idea how long it has been pipped because of that. Not sure if this one should get assistance, if it is another case of 'leave it alone.' Opinions?

And just to end on a high note, here are the 20 chicks that have successfully hatched so far! Marans, Barnevelders, and EEs.

chickydee64 .... none were alive in the hatcher. I am trying to figure out what went wrong but am having no luck.....got to put 4 more in the hatcher tomorrow....but they dont look to be alive in the bator from candling....need to dig deeper for more info...lol

LOL
Anyway, my only thought is perhaps a bacteria????????????
I am assuming your temp and humidity were running OK..............
When I ran my humidity to high........I drowned them....died just before hatch.........
Good Luck .
Lots of folks with experience here to help you......................

Red river:
Poor hubby...
I just wanted to comment that I was told in cases like having to put them back in the inc
to see if they can finish hatching themselves........to wrap a wet paper towel around the egg..............
And when I take an egg out to see if I can help (rarely) I hold it in a warm, wet face towel.does not shrink wrap that way.

You do not mention how long the chicks had pipped??????????
Most folks use time as an indicator of if and when to help.
good luck.I'm sure others will chime in.............

I'm thinking yeah, that's a pretty big hole, it will probably need help. On the one that has pipped at the wrong end, not sure how long it's been now, but I would help after 12 hrs. Love your babies colors!

I am finally.....in lock down!! Yaay! I am hoping to see some pips by tomorrow. I have some silkie eggs in there, and they usually hatch early..so pips tomorrow..come on babies. These are for a friend that I did this hatch a long.

if i keep them in the house with out changing there bedding for 4-5 days how bad wil it smell? how big of a food and water source will they need? my sister works all day so she wouldn't be able to put food and water in the brooder till she gets home. she works from 8-6, 7pm.

i have 6 right now, but i think i might end up with 10. i put 27 in the bator...but i don't think anymore will hatch. so realisticly how much will 10 chicks need for food and water?

holy molely what i am going to do?

Ok I have been using the horse pellet bedding it absorbs everything even smell!!!
I clean mine out every day but it really Dint need it so 5 days wouldn't be bad at all if you layer it at least a half to a full inch deep! Also I have 2 gal waterers an I put marbles deep so they don't drown and I have been changing mine every other day but they don't drink much of it .... I am sure my 18 chicks would be fine for 5 days like this I also have a long feeder of which stays pretty clean and it has plenty in it and it has been in there 4 days ..... Maybe that will help you!!

I put horse pellets in yesterday and they are enjoying eating the dust from the pellets...have you had this problem? They scratch down to the bottom and peck/eat the sawdust.

Thanks for your help!

The chick husband "helped" is still going strong. It was indeed shrink wrapped. I pulled her out and got all the shell fragments off. Wet down the membrane a bit. Could see blood vessels, but they were the tiny ones that are left after a chick hatches. Started pulling off the shrink wrapped membrane with tweezers... and it oozed a tiny amount of blood. Back into the bator with a damp paper towel over the top. Probably will try again in a little bit.

The chick at pipped the wrong end and hit a blood vessel ended up hatching by itself. It was a race between it and an EE chick. It won by about 30 seconds. :p

So, tally so far. Lockdown started with 40.

26 - hatched
1 - shrink wrapped, almost hatched.
1 - died after pipping through a blood vessel.
8 - doing nothing, no pips or chirping
4 - pipped and chirping
