March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

Yes run chick under warm water. Keep head out of water and blow dry but don't let chick get too hot from blow dryer. I had some chicks with sticky stuff and did this and they are all fine
Would it be okay if I did this tomorrow morning? She's having no problems with it right now.

She isn't too bad and as she starts to preen she will get rid of it herself in a few days. If it really bothers you I would take a warm wash cloth and "sponge bathe" her instead of running water over her. Seramas are way more delicate than a regular chick.

That is the result of a chick taking a long time to zip after pipping. I had several like that and just washed it off. It takes awhile and you have to rub against the fluff to make it fluffy. Have a blow dryer going and intermittently blowdry it
Raine and Stormy are doing great - I'm going to fix up a boot for Raine's crooked toes tomorrow. However, Raine has someething covering her back - is this sticky chick? Do I just rinse and blow dry under warm water and will it come off?

Phew, its been a long and stressful day. Here's the summary: 5 ameraucanas hatched successfully, the one that pipped on the wrong end did not make it, an orpington and grocery store egg have pips, and 6 more don't have any obvious action. I'm sad about the one that died because I'm not sure if it was my inexperience or if it was deformed. However I'm too squeamish to do an eggtopsy to figure it out, I never did well at dissecting things in biology.

I'll post more pics tomorrow but here are the first 4 fluffy butts:

I have to admit that the little dark one is my favorite. And now for names...

I recommend doing eggtopsies, otherwise you don't learn from what went wrong. It's really not that gross ;)

I love Ameracaunas! Such personable little hens they make and the roos are so handsome! I have a white roo and one each of the black and white hens. Plus two chicks I hatched out three weeks ago under a broody hen.

(Oh, and definitely the dark one! I love blue anything, but that's lovely colouring!

Thank you Hokankai - from now on, eggtopsies it is. (I wasn't squeamish and I was sure I knew why - after WEEKS of running just fine, the temp dropped! - Grrrr.....

I'm so thankful for the hatch I did get!! )

18 eggs went into lockdown Monday and SIXTEEN lovely little duckies popped out by the end of Thursday night. YAY!

It was a couple of late nights and one close call where I helped one out, but otherwise very straight forward. We got four pure pekins and the rest are cayuga, and a mix of cayuga, black swede, pekin and sussex. And tiny! OMG! The littlest one is half the size of the pekin babes. Half! The little beak is about the size of my pinky nail. Too cute!

Hope I don't give you photo overload. I love to share!

My favourites are the 'helper' and the pekin resting on my finger. Oh, and the beak visible through the pip.

Thought I'd let everyone know...yesterday was a horrible and tragic day for me. We had a coon break into my lavender call duck pen. I went out yesterday morning to find FIVE dead ducks and a dead Polish rooster that was in the pen with them. The survivors are in the house getting some much needed love and care. Out of the five that survived, only one was unharmed...the other four have puncture wounds, bruises, and other injuries to boot. Needless to say, I was devastated. I had been working on this color project for almost three years! I feel extra bad too because I had promised PugBug some eggs from them. I'm simply heartbroken over the whole thing.
