Mareks experience needed. prelim results pg 9

Dh used the hatchet, they said that or cervical dislocation(dh did this method before but didn't work out the way he expected). They said the blood is taken directly from the heart so we didn't need to worry about blood loss.

It's not in the soil unless a chicken put it there.
It's hard to say because Marek's can show up soon or later, in one chicken but not another.
I put together a history, that showed me why 7 chickens died in the last 2 years. And the only chicken that didn't hatch here was a silkie pullet, and there were no deaths before her. I never put 2+2 together til my silkies hatched these Polish.

My guess. If the pullet hatched at your home, someone before her brought it in. Who was the last chicken brought into your flock alive? If it wasn't the last live chicken introduced, I might say that someone already in your flock would have shown symptoms before the Dec. chick.

I think the only thing now is to know your flock carries it. You may lose one or so of them sporadically. Any new addition needs to be vaccinated at a day old, or they may die.

Can't think of anymore right now.

Thanks! I had assumed in the soil because years ago my farm was a chicken farm and the people that lived here before me had chickens. But I would think it would have showed up before December also. So the last new ones were in November and safe to assume possibly from them.

Thank you nonsuch, Krista & Karen for your responses. Krista- thank you for the additional info, I was wondering if blood loss would be a problem, but I figured there would still be some retained in the body somewhere. Unfortunately DH was called to work today, so we'll have to wait until tomorrow- the poor girl has to go one more night. I'm still hoping the report comes back to something not contagious and all of this can just be over with. Poor chickens.

I'm afraid my banty roo (6 months) may have Mareks. Everything is normal with him except he has a cold and his eyes are strange. No disformed pupils, but they are a shade of gold that's weird and his eyes are mottled with a dark chocolate color. And stupid me decided to go buy chickens from the flea market Sunday morning, I'm pretty sure this will be the death of my flock. For this mutt banty has introduced Marek's and I think I'll have to cull all my chickens and not get any again...

That really disheartens me. Is there anything I can do now? Tonight I'm sanitizing all the coops and moving them, then turning the topsil under. Hopefully nobody has Mareks but I might as well do this anyway.

Chickens don't get colds, if there is any sneezing or other "cold" symptoms then it is NOT mareks

I don't know what breeders do. I really don't know what I would do since I don't sell chickens. I think if you had a problem, you would know by now. So it's hard to worry about something that may not be there. But if you are Marek's free, then I'd be careful about who you add to your flock. The only safe thing is to hatch eggs.
