Maryland Poultry Swap & Farmer's Market October 1st 9-3 SHARPSBURG

Windy and dusty at the Jefferson County Fair. Saw a couple of folks who were at the Spring event at Erin's farm in Sharpsburg. Lots of folks, but not many chicken people. The few chicken lovers that I talked with were great. Didn't get a chance to see which birds won the ribbons and awards, but the judging is complete.

Tonya, I have two WM boys from Carol and am excited to get that dark egg laying gene into my olive eggers. I'm crossing them with peachick's wheaten ameraucanas so, I can have wheaten olives.. It's going to be a long wait though.. no excitement or hatch time.. or even watching them grow. Waiting til actual egg laying is going to be different. Then! how do you tell who's laying the dark ones and who's not

If you can not trap nest do to not being home to let them out. I have found that a cheap game camera facing the nest boxes with clear view of each works great. Of course they have to have bands on . The easiest is to use colored zip ties for each hen and notes as to who has what color. Now with dk egg layers you have to wait till they lay a dk egg for a full month/ one a day at same level before you can be sure to say she is a dk egg layer for sure. Kinda the same with the dk olive color. Only diff is the first two eggs and last two eggs of cycle will be off colors. At least that's the way mine are. The oel rooster I have for sale is half blue wm as well as the hens I'm keeping. I love the color they throw for chicks so much I might keep one bwm to cross with for next year. She has the boldest coloring out of all of the bwm's I had. I am also going to cross a extra auburn rooster on them just to get some more outstanding colors to work with.
Best of luck with that. I really enjoy working my own line for the last few years so much so I could not sell them all no matter what.
It is nice not to have to worry about sop on something & just have fun.
Enjoy!

I have two pairs of bantam buff columbian cochins and one pair of project mill fleur bantam cochins that have wonderful type but are too light. Some like to call them calico. I am donating them to the silent auction located in the Show Clinic barn. All proceeds go to benefit the Virginia Breeder's Association in appreciation of Tom Roebuck's support. If anyone else is showing or would just like to help and has some quality birds to donate, mucho gracius!

We will also be collecting door prizes for the raffles. This spring we had some gorgeous wildlife calls, some neat chicken items and baskets/ bowls that were themed. Anything you could put together would be appreciated. Everyone had a lot of fun with this

It looks like this storm isn't going to give us too much nonsense... just some gentle drizzle. The horses are loving it and the peacocks and turkeys are just resting under bushes..

He's THE MAN here and knows it.

I have some good news about the website. We never really lost hits. Even when we weren't advertising for a swap, I was getting 20 or so hits a day. We're back up to 75-125 hits per day but, the really neat thing is where before most hits were from the craigslist ads and from here, they are now about half that and the other half are google searches. What that means is it is spreading quickly by word of mouth. So.. I am very happy about that. A total of over 12,000 hits to date from when we first launched this passed April

It has helped tremendously having the support of the poultry clubs. I hope many of you take advantage of the Show Clinic. Tom will do a bang up job. Even if you enter just one bird. We don't have the ability to house 100's but, having some quality birds for Tom to judge against will really help out. Get with Tammy (Majestic Lane) if anyone is interested.

I will have:

QUAIL!!! lots of quail
lol.png

I raise jumbo coturnix. They lay nice sized eggs..just a hair smaller than an old english and they are cholesterol free... not the quail.. just the eggs. The birds get to a nice eating size with larger breasts than reg. quail or bobwhite.

I will also have some odds and ends.. maybe an olive egger pair and some bantam cochins. I will try and part with a young rosecomb pair as well to donate to the silent auction but, it'll be hard. My line, after 4 years, is finally my line.. that sounds good and they are getting really nice. I want to donate a nice pair.. but, not the nicest and with rosecombs, you should typically wait 6 months to cull down once you're passed obvious defects. They're only 4 months but.. we'll see.

I'm taking off cross Maryland on Thursday and am hitting Thurmont, Monrovia, and everything in between to post flyers. Kat, if you could hit Emmittsburg and your local feed store, and Tammy, you hit Berkeley Springs and Hedgesville if ya get a chance.. I think we'll knock it down. If there is anyone in No. Va or PA that would like to help, email me and I will send you a high quality image to print and post in your local feed stores.

I really appreciate all the help. I am still hunting for a bluegrass ensemble to hang out for a couple of hours for a hundred bucks or so if anyone knows of anyone...
