Hi gardeningmama...I am not too far from you, in Freeland. Welcome to the area!
Hi Mommabird. Yes, you are only 45 min. from me. Heaven help us all, I've found a local chicken lover!! LOL

Anne Arundel County chick here!

And the zoning laws say you must have 40,000 sq feet of land to keep a "unit" of chickens (32). We have half that much. :(

Does anyone else live near me??
I want to change this law some way, but I have no idea where to even start. Advice please?!

My chicks right now will go to our 4-H farm when they're older right now.

Hello to all and a special hello to Montgomery County chicken people. I live in Clarksburg, have a few hens, and am interested in buy/swap for a silkie hen. Anyone out there who wants to trade?

I work for Bennett Creek Animal Hospital on 355 (he'll see your chickens if they get sick/injured). I know there will be silkies at the Sharpsburg swap. If you can't make it to the swap, I would be happy to pick something up for you.

Wanted: Dead rooster. My vet is willing to caponize roos for me (for crowing/anger management). However, when he attempted the surgery yesterday, using instructions I gave him off BYC, he could only find one testicle (wish he found ovaries). After watching him fish around through a small hole looking for the other testicle I said "enough". He's willing to try again but, he needs to necropsy a roo so he knows where everything is. I didn't know where else to look but here. I live outside Annapolis and travel 70 W to Frederick and Clarksburg to work (crazy, I know). I also plan on attending the swap in Sharpsburg this weekend. If anyone has a roo that is willing to sacrifice his body to science. He will be helping other roos to be more quiet and less angry and maybe keep their pet homes. Please PM me with any suggestions/offers.

Just picked up a Buff Orpington Rooster at the Maryland Poultry swap and Farmers Market today. He's not too vocal, but is picking on my sex links(not real bad yet). He seems to get along with the Australorps and the Barred rocks. They have treats, roosts, and enough to keep them busy. Any suggestions would be appreciated to stop the picking, or is this normal for a newly added rooster. Hope he settles down and leaves them alone, or he will be in the fryer sooner than later.

It's completely normal. He is establishing the pecking order, and it seems that your sex links are at the bottom of it. They will get it, and stay out of his way for a bit. Then fall in line and follow him everywhere. Happened to me, and now I'm going through it again with some new additions that have to learn their place.

Chickens will sometimes pick on the weak or sick chicks. It's nature's way of culling. Wouldn't worry too much unless you see blood. BTW, love your coop!

You should think about quarantining any birds you bring home from a swap. Sometimes just the stress of the event and subsequent new home will cause a healthy bird (any animal really) to become sick. It's so much easier to treat one bird as opposed to all your birds. Just a thought, not a sermon

I went to that swap as well. It was a really good time! Erin really does a great job with that event.
