I am in Bowie. Although I don't have any yet, I am planning on raising Rhode Island Reds on a small scale. Does anyone know where I can find info on zoning or other legal issues related to backyard chicken raising in Bowie, Prince George's County, MD? I really want to do this, but if I go to jail I won't be able to feed my chickens!

I think it might depend on where you are in Bowie - if its a "neighborhood" type setting, chickens could pose problems with your neighbors, and you might have to keep them so many feet from a residential dwelling, or you might have to have so many square feet of property before you can keep them.

My sister had a pot bellied pig for 5 or 6 years before the City of Bowie found out about him, and they made her get rid of him. Oh, it was a big stink - Animal Control was in on it, Zoning, etc... And they were ticked! Gave her a time limit, threatened fines, the works! This was years ago, and things may have changed since then - 'course, swine may be different from poultry, but they all may be looked upon as "livestock", I dunno - but I'd call those numbers that Jenna gave, and ask LOTS of questions before bringing any chicks home.
