So sorry to hear about your loss. I lost 7 chickens this summer, one by one, by a bobcat sneaking in at night. Rewired pen and he just climbed up a tree and jumped in, so built another pen with a top on it and ran hot wire all around my property. Now I have finally solved the chicken killing problems! A friend rescued an Akbash livestock guardian dog for me and he protects my chickens from EVERYTHING! At night (they are nocturnal dogs) he gets up and sits betw. the two chicken pens and guards them all night. Daytime he is in the yard sleeping but if anything comes in or he even smells anything, he is barking. They are friendly to kids, people (if socialized) and gets along with all my other animals. Now I can sleep at night again and feel my chicks are all safe. If you have the room for one, a livestock guard dog is wonderful! I don't think a dog in town will challenge him as they are about 120-130 lb dogs made to fight bears! ha

I'm going to have to look that breed up, never heard of it, thanks...Bluedog420(BYCer) keeps telling me I need to buy one of his heeler pups and raise it in the chicken pen and that it would protect the flock. Guess I'll have to do something like that as soon as I'm done expanding the run and reinforcing it. There will be plenty of room for a guard dog when it's finished.

Thank you all for the condolences and very good advice, am now ready to correct what went wrong.

And we had another survivor show up last night or this morning, my DD had to call and let me know as I am out of town at my parents picking up our chain link.

Cindy

I'm so sorry. The same thing happened to me Wednesday-- I only had three chickens but neighbor dogs killed them all-- and I know how you feel. It's devastating.
