The same happened to me......but it was my own. My black lab mix killed two of my chickens a couple of months ago. Whaddaya do then? My DH loves that dog! Right now, I'm looking for an invisible fence to put around the coop. Dixie tries to get close to the coop......ZAP!

I only lost one this evening, My beloved Brownie (the one in the middle

Lots of warm fuzzy thoughts being sent your way!!

My friend all of us who loose or have lost know your feelings and send electronic hugs. Dogs will always think chickens are squeeky toys, so mend the fences and tighten the wire. Open communications with the dog owner and all other dog owners around you. A pullet to egg laying looks to be about $12.00 and eggs lost are $3.50 a dozen. Thanks to others on this site for those prices. 5 Months of egg laying lost at an egg a day = 150 eggs. 150 divided by 12 = 12.5 Dozen eggs at $3.50 = $43.75 + $12 for the bird = $55.75 per Bird just in supplies and eggs lost. I think $50 a bird should make most dog owners responsible. Sad news is it dosent. Document your actions with this dog owner. If you end up in court you will have to walk every document through as many procesocuters will think defending chickens a joke.

After the loss of 18 of my chicks to a neighbors dog who went thru the electric fence I hooked my electric fence up to 110 and let everyone on the road know and put signs up. I sure am glad I did.

The neighbor on the other side of me had her brothers dog for the weekend (guess it is a new thing). My brother in law let me know that when he came to get wood off the property that the dog was only about 6 inches from the fence and in stalking mode he scared him away.

I don't have the new neighbors phone # but I called the neighbor next to her and told her I have chickens and a electric fence would she let the neighbor know (she is related to this lady). She said no problem and I was assured that the dog would not be over here again.

Most of my neighbors are really good and we all work together for the better of the neighbor hood. It is just the one who's dog killed my chickens that is the jerk.

I think that is a good start but do you plan on replacing your chickens after only 5 months of laying? Most lay very well till 2 years sometimes 3 years. Also you have to figure your time as well on if you planned to sell hatching eggs from your flock. I don't know about some of you but I have paid up to $28. a dozen plus shipping for hatching eggs. Some not as much. Don't forget if you raise them from eggs you have the expense of hatching in there as well. Chick food to get them to that age then layer food and some like me mix the foods. I use 2 part scratch to 1 part layer pellets with black sunflower seeds mixed in. Not cheap by any means. And if you have to start over then you are 6 months or more before you get eggs from them. It adds up and adds up fast.

Just wanted to throw that in just in case some sell hatching eggs.
