Maxine the House Chicken

Such a tough life, LOL! I am thinking about getting a chick for her to look after. Would this be a good idea or not? I have been giving her a little stuffed chick and she sits on it sometimes. I am not sure how that would work-- any ideas?

Here is how she is unwinding from a rough day today-

One of my semi-house chickens (I have two which go outside during the day and come in to sleep inside at night PLUS Sparkle the House Silkie raising four chicks) decided she was going to lay her eggs in the dog bed under the TV table.

This made one of my dachshunds very nervous, because he hides his bones in that dog bed. (He sleeps on the sofa or with me in bed - the "dog bed" was just a great place for Zorro to stash things so Dooley - the other dachshund - couldn't find them.)

Then Punkin went broody in that dog bed, determined to hatch some eggs. I let her, after removing a hidden bone...... God forbid Zorro should even pass by her for those three weeks whilst she sat on those eggs! And then when they hatched, oh MY!

I don't think your Maxine will accept a chick unless she is actually broody and has been for a while.

Thank you for the insight! What a great story!

I let her out with the other girls in the evenings to scratch and eat and socialize, but she just gets beat up sometimes. I can't really leave her completely unattended or I think our meanest girl would pluck her bare. It breaks my heart not to let her be free with the other girls, but I know its best for her safety not to be. It does seem that she is getting pretty used to being inside. She has lost some weight and only wants to eat a big amount when she is out with the flock. I want her to gain that weight back so she stays healthy!

Ok, now I am rambling! :)

Thanks again!

Aw that is so cute! It's great to know that you're giving her a chance when others would not.
