MAY 2016 "Land of the Free Because of the brave!" Hatch-a-Long Hosted by, Mike & Sally

Ok, so I am not just a hatch-a-holic. As you may have notice in my avatar, we have other critters as well. Since I just can't wait for my broody chicks to hatch next weekend, we added two new members to our family.

They aren't chickens but they are cute anyway!

A friend today asked me what chickens I have and what I am hatching my reply makes me laugh. Never ever thought I'd even own chickens.

Oh Macy the list is long... last year I got 1 light brahma, 4 easter eggers, 2 crested cream leg bars, 1 golden campine, 1 buff orpington, and 1 lavender orpington. Then earlier this year the dogs got an easter egger and a legbar. So i had already wanted to get more so i decided to order a few.... lol arriving on may 25th 1 australorp, 2 salmon faverolles, 1 barred rock, 1 blue andalusian, 2 blue orpingtons, 1 brown leghorn 1 blue splash marans and 1 white marans. (10 more)all hens because i love the colorful egg basket. But they didnt have a couple that i wanted so i decided to order some eggs to hatch. Arriving april 27th .. 12 eggs.... 3 each of super blue egg layers, blue lace red wyandotts, rees cream legbars, and easter eggers. Knowing shipped eggs you are lucky to get 1/2 to hatch. THEN i fell in love with Isabelle leg horns so i bought 4 chicks. They arrived with 4 isbars in tow. (2 blue and 2 splash.) Prior to their arrival i stopped at TSC for feed (omg they had chicks) i brought home 1 welsummer hen and a red sex link hen and 4 bantams.... unknown sex. Now i am also hatching eggs for 5 Isabelles and 7 Ayam Cemani (a black purple and green chicken) and 8 sizzle silkies and a barn yard mix of 15 eggs. OMG i am over run. But i am hatching for friends too so some of these if they hatch have homes.oh yeah i forgot i also purchased 10++ croads langshads to arrive this week also. Plus i already hatched the 6 game chicks for a friend in the April HAL. Lol. My shirt is appropriate
I...I need that shirt. Where on earth did you get it?

In other notes, 7 day candle happens tonight! I've discovered none of the store eggs were fertile. Not a big surprise, little dissapointing, but it freed up room in the incubator, so I'm not playing airsack jenga anymore xD Most of the rest seem to be developing. Tonight's the night I pull them all out and check! Woohoo!

So does anybody know how to break a broody hen? I really want her to hatch some eggs but since i switched to
http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/dumor-layer-pellet-16-50-lb?cm_vc=-10005 my hens just don't lay a lot of eggs anymore. yesterday one of their eggs were oddly shaped. I might let my silkie hatch except i have been getting very little eggs lately. Does anybody know what laying feed to feed my chickens? Thanks!

I hear an ice bath also works, 5 gallon bucket of ice water, dunk her for like 10 seconds

I've got 7 blue/splash silkies and 6 buff rocks in the incubator. Today is day 11 and all are looking good and lively! This is my first batch in my new Incuview, so here's hoping for a successful one!

Well, I guess May is just about here... Time to switch threads. :)

I set a few more Silkie eggs today and candled a couple that I set a few days ago and they are fertile!! So two hens are now laying fertile eggs. I am so excited because I have a paint roo and a black, split lavender, showgirl roo over black and showgirl hens, so I am just dying to see what hatches. Presumably some lavender, black, showgirl and possibly paint chicks and who knows what else??? So fun!
