May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

I am also saving eggs for a probable broody. She's a little Sebright hen who last year succeeded w 4 LF eggs. Now we also have her own fertile eggs. How many of her own could she cover? How many LF can a bantam cover? And if I wanted to do some of each? I was thinking 3small and 3LF. Maybe 4s and 3L? More? Anyone have experience with this?
The LF eggs I have are Spitzhauben and they are on the medium side.

I gave up on using nail polish on cracked eggs because honestly I tried it on two of my quail and neither of them made it to lockdown. Both started getting stinky.

I will not use anything to seal cracks ever again and I will just throw eggs away, it's not worth ruining my whole hatch anymore.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I will be watching the nail polished egg closely, but am not expecting success. I probably won't try it again...unless by some miracle it works 😂.

I got that it works for some people, but all the eggs that I did just got stinky and disgusting.

I also feel like you run a risk of ruining your entire hatch with an exploding egg. I'd rather just chuck it and put another egg from outside in there.

I know a lot of people don't have that convenience, but the quail eggs that I just got, five of them were correct and none of them made it to lockdown with nail polish.

Yeah for some reason it didn't occur to me to just replace the egg with one from my flock...d'oh! We'll see what happens, but I'm going to remove it at the first sign of trouble. Not worth losing the hatch.

I am SO bummed that only 10/14 eggs fit in the darn incubator (ordered a new bigger one today!). Just so happens that my friend has a broody hen....so we are dropping the extra 4 eggs off for the broody this afternoon.

Good thing for the broody girl!

I have the opposite bummer - my turner only accommodates 12, so that's all I set, but since it malfunctioned and I'm hand turning now I'm bummed because I could have easily fit at least a few more in there! :tongue

Lucky you! Mine tells me NOT to go near them, at all! Not even to look. :tongue although with everything going on right now he's relaxed a little on the whole 'we don't need more animals' bit, especially ones that we can eat (or that lay food....).

Fingers crossed he brings home peeps!

Hahaha my husband is the same! Normally he’s like “no more birds!!!” (I never listen)....but now he sees me incubating eggs and he’s either given up or doesn’t care because we can eat the eggs and extra roosters if we want to.

My husband went to tractor supply and they had turkey poults for 50% off.
