May 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
Day 11-12 here! (Set over 2 days). I am down to 34 from the 41 I started with…so I have a friend with extra eggs in her incubator (it holds over 40 and she doesn’t want that many). If I lose any more on day 14 (Sunday), do you think it would be safe to move a couple of hers to my incubator? About a 10 minute car ride…I’d put them upright in an egg carton with heated seats on. No different than a momma hen getting off her nest to eat, right?

I think my uncle stored this batch in the basement instead of counter in the farmhouse. It is a touch colder down there. I’ve had such good hatches with our farm eggs so having 7 quit before my lockdown check is rare…I will be picking the eggs daily myself for the next hatch as I don’t want to risk them not being stored ideally next time. When this group hatches next weekend, I’ll be putting in the next batch right away. Will probably be my last hatch of the year, unless this customer wants another. They are taking this whole batch (minus silkies), and the next whole batch after this one!

Butterfly has pipped… at the wrong end. What do I do now… (off to read all the posts on it)

No need to do anything other than allow it extra time to hatch. It's basically an internal and external pip at the same time so it may stay like that for quite a lot longer than a regular pip.

Best to be extra careful about not opening up the incubator or letting the humidity drop because the membrane will be exposed for longer than a regular pip so you don't want to let it dry out.

The other thing that could happen is the chick could hit a blood vessel and you might see some blood but try not to panic if that happens. I've had so many malpositions and many of them had quite a bit of blood but they all hatched fine on their own. You just need to let it take its time.

Malpositions are often lethal because the chick can't get into a position to pip at all. The ones that manage to pip like this one has usually hatch no problem. Just leave it alone and it will more than likely be absolutely fine.

Thank you! That’s what I was reading too. So hard when the advice is always “sit on your hands” with chickens 😂
