May 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
Mozzarella has 3 babies! One SLW and two Wyandotte/Bresse mixes 🤦‍♀️ I was hoping for all pure Wyandottes buuuut my Bresse roo is still making contributions lol plus his two babies are bigger and stronger than the SLW chick 😬 I hope she didn’t step on that baby and cause some damage, because idk, it seems a little weaker compared to the others. I’m going to set up a crate with vitamin water and chick starter for everyone soon, and try to get some pics
Congratulations Mozzarella! I hope the little one will be ok. Can't wait to see the pictures.

I put the little family in a large crate in my greenhouse tunnel, because it was actually freezing last night and this morning. I figured it should be the warmest/safest place for them all, as long as the door stays propped open during the day and mama has water. I’m a little worried about night time, because the tunnel isn’t as secure as the coop. We’ll see what happens…

I hope everyone else with broody mamas has successfully hatches!! Lol 3/7 eggs set isn’t exactly the best hatch rate compared to my incubator, but it was fun (slightly stressful) letting a broody do her thing.

Yes, this weather has been ridiculous, and caused many delays in my plans. It rained almost constantly for the last six days and the property is mud all over! Close to freezing at night, too.

Eventually, I want to be able to have all broodies for raising chicks. I feel this is better for the chicks, and the chickens. I've always preferred a more natural approach to things. :)

All the eggs have hatched except the 3 I mentioned, we opened them up this morning, fully developed dead chicks. Looks like some severe shrinkwrapping happened, weren't even in position. Only got one chocolate at that, which I was more excited about getting. Really hoping to get a hygrometer/thermo soon. I'll be setting new eggs either this afternoon or tomorrow depending on how I feel. (I picked up eggs from a local private breeder monday, she gave me the freshest of what i asked for, but I'd like to set them as soon as possible, since fresher eggs tend to do better I hear. )

Two externals and one zipping! A bit worried at the lack of progress from the one that pipped and didn't do anything overnight, but will wait. After all, it only pipped last evening.
I was a mess this hatch with my last 5 taking their time. One I woke up to a pip and it still wasn't hatched when I went to bed after midnight. I convinced myself non were going to hatch and they would all be DIS. Woke up to 2 hatched and the other 3 pipped and one just hatched a bit ago. Hopefully the other 2 are out when I get home.

I have had 14/16 hatch so far. Last 2 are pipped. And one died under my broody. Not sure if it got squished or what.

After I get home from work I will give my broody my chicks that are hatched. Hopefully the other 2 are.
Hopefully that works! Wish I had some with eggs advanced enough or chicks young enough that I could foist some of these off on, lol!
