May hatch-a-long

Wow! You guys won't believe this. Due to Girl Scout logistics (apparently you can't pile kids in a car and transport without heeps of paperwork and vetting) I brought the incubator to tonight's meeting. Just waited till the last minute, added towels for padding around the eggs, wrapped it in a towel, short car ride (8 minutes away), and plugged it in when we got there.

Meeting goes from 4-5:30. At 4:45 one starts to zip! Everyone gathered around excitedly. It hatched about 5:15. How amazing is that?! Exactly what I'd hoped for. How often does that happen? I'd placed all the pipped eggs together when I added the towels. They didn't seem to be doing much. I thought we were out of luck. But this little guy decided to be a rockstar and made an appearance right on time.

Now all the pressure is off and I can relax and enjoy the hatch :jumpy

so my d,uccle is still broody and i am so happy for her this is her best time being broody yet so the last too times she went broody she was always off the nest while the other hens where laying eggs and she would always break but this time she is doing so good she got off the nest only one time yesterday and she is NOT letting the other hens nock her off the nest the other hens are laying eggs next to her i am so proud of her i guess second times the charm ;):wee:celebrate

Morning update. 2 eggs left in bator. 1 externally pipped. Took my broody hen and put her in the brooder box to see if she would addopt the chicks. She did. She isn't the brightest hen in the box (but she's the only one ) and I found one little chick laying in front of her on it's back this morning. It was cold, coukdnt stand, and was doing weird things with it's legs, so back in the bator it went to warm up. It's doing better now.

The 2 eggs in the bator went in later than the others, so I am not worried they are not over due. One is malpositioned though it did manage to internally pip. I candled quickly when I removed chicks yesterday. It's beak is really low in the egg. It was breathing really fast as well, so I made a safety hole and let it be. Checked it again when I put the chick in there to warm up. It is breathing better.

Just waiting for hatch now.

I am sorry I post so much. Can't contain my excitement!!! All is great. The pipped chick hatched and the malpositioned one managed to externally pip! Other 4 babies are doing well. One is weak from getting chilled, but it's back in the brooder with adoptive Mom and a heat lamp. It's a small lamp, so it's only warm enough if they are directly under it (so I don't burn mom). She's not the brightest.sl. She uses the babies as napkins to wipe her face after she eats. She doesn't put them under her. She does show them food and she let's them climb under her, but that's it. Lol. I think we will sell her after this.
