we saved our eggs longer then 3 days, put them in the house on counter in egg carton small end down, and don't wash eggs, but ours are almost always clean.
You have barred rocks? How are they when it comes to broodiness. I had two yrs. ago that I just loved, then I got a stinker. Had to place her. I just hatched one here a few months back, she is gorgeous, and seems to be a nice girl so far. So, like I asked, do they tend to go broody? Mine is a talker already! With her little peeping, she hasn't gotten her adult voice yet..looks like she should have by now..lol. And, another question, how soon do you see these starting to lay? Thanks!
Thank you, that is what I wanted to hear. I will have plenty of broodies once my silkies are grown. And, probably an OE or EE will eventually go..sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Wasn't too sure about the Barreds..thanks again.
My barred rocks never have been broody, although years ago my grandma had one that hatched some chicks. But I like them because they are pretty gentle and lay well. Also have a pair of light brahmas, a Sumatra hen that someone left here, an Easter egger, and a white rock. And my Rouen ducks
wow... it has been a long night! 2 chicks were out around midnight when I fell asleep, more were out around 5am when the POWER WENT OUT in my house! OMG can't believe I woke up?
I ran an extension cord from my car using a power inverter from the cigarette lighter until it came back on at 9am. I also have a 2nd incubator, which I allowed to cool down since I didn't want to combine those eggs in a high humidity environment (or open the hatcher). it was off for about 3-4 hours, I covered it in blankets to keep it warm, I don't think cooling should hurt anything.. they are d14.
the 1 week old chicks in the brooder didnt like it either... they were chirping loudly by the time it came back on!
anyway we have 7 babies out! and many more are pipped
