May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

Almost ready for lock down here. And need to do some more chick rearranging in the breed/brood coop. Pulled some SLW because they seemed to have been falling behind. But seem fine now after just a fe days. Will need to add my Mothers Day babies to the brooder out there soon so I have some space for my babies due Friday. Found some biodegradable mats I've had stashed to cover the wire mesh floor untilthey can handle the drafts an get a good footing.
Finally this month is almost over. I have been gnawing my knuckles waiting because the end of the month hatch.
Other than a couple broodies I will have almost 2 weeks off from fresh start broodies. Unless my guinea hen shoes up earlier than I was thinking she would.

still nothing from my hatching eggs that were scheduled to hatch friday.

Well quail still fine candled all looks well, lock-down in a couple more days. I sold off all my extra RIR chicks this afternoon and on a sad note, a dog got into the run and killed my entire flock. I am pretty devastated, I live in the city and never thought I would have so many predator issues. I think I will be tearing down that run and starting over in a new area. Clearly I need electric fencing and twice the reinforcements. Looks like I will be joining the June hatch-a-long after all since I need to start over.
I'm sending out positive vibes and hoping to get some back, Congrats again to those with healthy chicks, condolences to those who have lost, and good luck to those still waiting.

Sorry to hear about your flock. Thats seems to happen way to often. I think town might be worse for preds. With any stray cat and dog not to mention coons and anything people let free. And with the trash containers they can be sustained in a small area really easy. And not to mention other peoples pets that get loose.
Good luck on the quail. Your RIR extras, were the chicks part of your flock? Or were they still contained indoors? Just wondering if you have to completely start over or with chicks from now and hatches.
Thanks for the vibes and sending some back your way. I at the moment think I fit all your criteria for vibes. Have a CornishX with compacted crop but trying to see if he works it out. He's penned alone with water. Hope he pulls thru if not I have plenty more to make freezer weight.

Such cute fluffy butts! What breed is the reddish one?
Because of space and timing issues I had to feet creative with my 5/6 week chicks. They were getting to crowded in the brooder and I have new babies hatching as we speak that need it soon. The new coop isn't done yet.

I recently purchased a second hand 4x4 (x6 ft tall) dog kennel for cheap. I was using it for a broody hen and her babies but just moved them into another coop. Anyway, I wrapped 3 sides of this kennel in a tarp to keep wind and rain out, put down bedding, 2 roosts, and wire mesh on the front so the babies can't sneak out of the bars. It came with a tarp on the top that also keeps out rain. Because of the cold I rigged up their heat lamp inside the kennel so it shines down on them from about 4 ft up.

Here is a picture of it from last night.

I'll go take a picture of it in a few minutes so you can see the outside. It's not exactly money saving because a lot of the heat is lost, but since this is temporary for just a few days I don't mind.

Maybe you could come up with something similar? I'll get a few pictures and post soon.
thank you for the ideas. I do have a dog kennel. sound very good since i would like more chickens... this will definably work for me and in the winter as well.

Yea I'm the one with Memorial Day hatch also. Although I had one hatch today and expecting one or two more early. Hopefully ready hatch tomorrow. My nieces are coming and are electing chicks lol

Hello everyone! New member here.

We had the incubator going all month and several hatched from 5/21-5/24. There's a few more pips and what not, so I expect the remaining eggs to hatch by Tuesday. (Of the original 20, around 7-10 hatched and sent off to new homes!) Only disappointed that my Jersey Giant hasn't hatched along with the pure Silkiies.
