May Hatch Thread--Fill up those bators n' broodies!

Looks like chick waste...normal buildup of waste that has nowhere to go during growth inside the shell. Hard to tell for sure in the pic though... Could Possibly be yolk too??....
Can I cut off or will it dry up, it doesnt look like yolk. Because where it is attached is just skin there is no whole there.

I just joined BYC today. But I am in my 2 brooding hens one a bantam silkie and one a bantam cochin hatched 6 ameracana eggs on Mother's Day.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
A few things to say.
Hospital visits and GPs went as we thought.
They say DH is so ill because of care for Danny so I asked the consultant to draft a letter to that affect so that I had some amunition to battle for more overnights for Dan. Seeing the social worker in charge of his care Friday. We will see if they relent and give us more nighs? Then our little grandaughter was diagnosed with a heart murmur same as her mother! Hearts run in our family. It will be ok we just have to keep her monitored and hope she grows out of it. Her mom didn;t though and neither did her Granny DHs mum who also had vulve issues.

Talking of dear hearts. Sad news today :

The chicken God has visited - I let the girls out this morning and they were all fine and doing their thing. Checked them tonight and Gerty my lead hen my beautiful Maran lay dead on the ground in the pen. She had rigor so had been dead a while. I scooped her up and we took her inside. We took feathers from her ( which we didn;t do with the hens that died from the cold over winter as they were sick and I want to make an indian head dress for wee Jess with the feathers. ) Then DH and I had a cuddle with her and a cry and last minuite words. I told her I was sorry not to have found her earlier and that she was with her sister Bertha now in chicken heaven. She has soooo missed Bertha and would not roost since she died and only slept in the nest box where Bertha slept since her foot injury a few years back. - Poor thing must have grieved so much she just had a heart attack and dropped. There was no sign of illness or injury and when I checked the egg box there was just one egg, it was her last gift. It was Gertys egg. I am very sad indeed. This is the 4th hen weve lost since Feb. So I hope we get a new generation of chickies comming through. I only have two hens left from the original 6 now - only Isobella and Caroline. How sad is that!!!!

Then I have Mable and Betty (sisters) who are Berthas chicks but are genetically Isobellas. The other two are rescue Rhode Islands reds Sisters Flourence/ flourentine! And Aggy / agnes

Oes - keeping the fingers crossed for chicks come the weekend. Finding it hard to keep humidity above 50 though even with all the trays full of water and a wet sponge in with the eggs!

So sorry to hear - such a hard day.

Can you hatch Gerty's egg?

I have some improvement with my little chick. I think it had splayed legs so I've used a bandaid to keep them together. It can now stand a lot better and almost walk a little. It still falls down a lot and rolls around but no where near as much as it was. Am I doing the right thing trying to fix it? Or should I put it out of its misery? The other chicks are not being kind in the brooder so its in a basket on its own.

No sadly we don;t have a roo boy now as the neighbours objected even though we back onto a farm! With cows bellowing and a donkey and all sorts of farm noise. I had to give back the roo we borrowed that gerty orriginally beat up years ago! Unfortunately the only Maran egg to hatch from those was another roo boy! So he went too. Now I have no Maran's at all! I had thought that Isobella (who is joint second in command here since Gerty took over from Bertha, though Bertha and Gert lead together.) Would have taken the leadership. Funny thing is I saw Gerty hanging out with Mable a great deal the last few days. Mable being one of Bertha's chicks. Bertha and Gerty were sisters and very close. Well when I checked tonight Mable was sleeping in the egg box where Gerty slept and Bertha before her so I think Isobella has been upstaged and Mable has been chosen to lead the mob. Gerty, Isobella and Caroline were always known as the Buzzards because they were always up to bother and mischief! Hard that that is at an end. I do hope Isobella doesn't get too upset. She is more of a mess about with Caroline - try to fly out of the yard or get up on the roof of the house - that kind of stuff. Isobella and caroline are always the only two to get their feathers cut! So maybe Gerty chose Mable because she is very much like Gerty - feisty and doesn;t shun from a fight! Just what the girls need for a good leader to keep them safe as we don't have a roo boy. Poor DH was near to tears. I have not seen him that upset over a chicken in a longtime and he was upset when Bertha died. He is not afraide to hold them and rock them in his arms like a baby. - It is nice but sad for him. We bring them into the world and see them out of it. I am sooo hoping the eggs hatch this time as now we are down to 6 hens so we are needing new fresh blood in the flock.

Oes - we are day 19 tomorrow! Please keep these little eggs in your thoughts we really need live hatches this time round.

You are not wasting your time with this baby. Lots of chicks are born with leg issues I have sent you a link to help you. Euthanasia is a last resort. You have to think of how cramped it was in that tiny shell. Give it time and look at the link for splinting care. Seperation is the right thing to do right now make sure it have a teddy or something soft to snuggle and you can use a mirror to make t think it is not alone!

Oes -
