Mcmurray hatchery

Don't hold your breath that the extra is rare or exotic. I think it is more like "free. our choice. don't complain." I don't know why they advertise that way and then send out something as common as red-sex links, but they do. Although, you could be one of the lucky ones.

I was delighted with my extra, it's a White Crested Black Polish. Never had any plans to keep Polish, but it certainly adds some variety.

How about getting the full order then selling the ones you don't want off of Craigslist.com?
You might be able to sell them at a little older and get more money then you paid for them from the hatchery... just a thought.

Maybe you can find a couple other people local to you who would be willing to split an order. I'm new to chickens (don't even have them yet) but I'm thrilled that since I joined here, I've been PMing with someone local and we're going to split an order from MMH. She was looking for someone to split an order with and then here I came along! Yay!

I'm pretty sure Belt Hatchery only ships. They are only about an hour away from me and I would have gotten my chicks there last year if I could have picked them up myself.

I hadn't really intended to do it this way, but it seems that I may have to order many many more than I actually want and then sell or give away the extras. I'll contact a few farms around here that sell 16 week pullets to see if they would take some of them too, (that was great idea). Bigger problem is how am I supposed to do this without becoming attached??? I have 11 girls in a city where I'm only supposed to have 4

If there are any northern CA BYCers out there that would like some of these breeds, I'd love to split....

Sicilian Buttercup

Speckled Sussex

White plymouth rock

Silver laced wyandotte

You could always order extra and sell the ones you decide not to keep. That way, you are getting what you would like for the best value, and you are also able to provide chicks to others who may not have been able to order a small amount. Craigslist can be your best friend

That is what we are doing, even with the smaller order of 16 plus two extras. I only want to keep about seven. I wanted one boy and the rest pullets. When I placed my order, it was for 15 pullets plus one male. I ended up getting 2 extras.

A friend wants some of them, but only wants pullets. I will still have a few to find homes for. The only problem is I don't know for sure which is the boy. I have heard you can sex them for the first couple of days by looking at their feathers. The girls have longer primary feathering. I think I know which one might be the boy..but I'm not 100%. So, I will have to keep them a little longer until I figure it out for sure.

You might run into the same thing if you order several breeds with simular coloring when they are babies. You might have to keep them intil they feather in to figure out which one is which. HOwever, if the breeds look different, it wouldn't be a problem.

I read on one of the sites that they can band them to identify...is that ok for the chicks? I don't mind paying the extra $$$
