MCMURRAY

I ordered from them in March and wasn't able to get my chicks till May because of the spring rush, but boy oh boy were they some active little chicks! I had to keep the tiny things from jumping out of their shipping box! I ordered 26 and got 28, one had to be culled on day one (had a problem with its neck, couldn't lift it to drink or eat, I think a marek's vaccine gone wrong since they shoot them in the neck) and then my rare chick, which I think was a black faced spanish, died at week 2. Other than that everything has been great, my cochins were acting a little funny at one point, but other than that everything is great. I don't know if they'll lay very well, which is my next point to look for, but all in all I liked them a lot!

Anyone had any bad laying experiences with MM hens? LOL!

I always managed to get ahold of the lady named Ruth when I called, and she was very helpful.

I was thinking of ordering Buff Orps, black silkies, white cochins, cuckoo marans, brown leghorns, and arucanas from MM in january/feburary. I am not so sure now. it seems like either love it or hate it -

btw you out there whos chicks died did you get overnight expres? that is what I was going to do.

After 11 of 26 died the first week, (probably part of the virus thing they had a problem with this spring) they all seem to be OK now but they have not gotten very large. (They are supposed to all be standards)

Perhaps it's the heat, I don't know. At 22 weeks only 5 have started laying and all of the eggs have been very tiny. I'm hoping we'll start to get more soon. I had 4 other pullets from the feed store (none of which have started to lay) and one of McMurrays ended up being a Delaware roo (or perhaps a sex link roo that we rehomed) Anyway... in November I will check all of the hens and any that haven't started to lay will go to the freezer.

I suppose I'll order from Ideal or MPC next time I order.

I have looked and looked at murray mcmurray's catalog but have bought from a FANTASTIC hatchery called Welp Hatchery in Bancroft Iowa.I love The chicks I get every time, they also have poultry supplies and other types of poultry like turkeys, guineas, etc. I have lost MAYBE 20 out of 500 those twenty were not disease-related, they were because of predators getting into my hen house.

I ordered 25...got 27...one died at 2 weeks...one has cross beak...but 25 perfectly healthy ones! They are 5 weeks now.

My original flock came from MM. They were a pleasure to work with, professional, and all the chickens arrived healthy. I would order from them again. The only drawback is that you have to order in such a large quantity. This year I only wanted to a ten, so I got them from a local feed store and was just as pleased. Good luck.

Hello! I ordered 40 chicks from them, seven died, one has a cross beak also. But they had no problem crediting my account. The only problem was trying to figure out which chicks were which. I also ended up with 2 New Hampshire Reds when I only ordered one and they are both cockerels. They also sent me one free exotic, which made it harder to figure out who was who. Overall, I was pleased, but I will probably try elsewhere next time, to see if we have better luck.

Many of the coolest breeds are only available straight run. I'd cheerfully pay to get a cuckoo maran hen, but they don't offer it. (Though actually I'd avoid their marans -- not only have 3 out of 3 straight run been male, but 2 of the three have had crooked toes and/or bent legs -- validating to see a previous poster notice the same issue.). Of the only four fancy available sexed, one pullet was male. The eleven straight run... I think 7 pullets, so not bad.

I had the same problem when odering the Cuckoo Marans from MM.

I ordered five.Out of the five.I had 4 roo's and 1 hen. Also had an issue with crooked toes. The hens feet were fine. The Roo's had all crooked feet.I kept only 1 Roo who had all straight toes except the outter one.

What's up with that?????????
