I just read on another list that MM is now telling people that they used some contaminated litter or shavings. An un-named chemical was in it.

Now let's see if people on this list are told the same thing.

I've seen all sorts of stories floating around, and none of them are as yet substantiated. Until then everything is rumor and guess work. I'm not making light of anyones problem. But unless a necropsy is performed on YOUR chicks there is NO PROOF of what your chicks died from. There are multiple diseases or toxins out there with similar symptom patterns. Vitamin deficiencies, generally weak stock and chilling could also account for some of the descriptions on threads here.

Losses in shipped chicks are not uncommon and expected by those who ship chicks all the time. No different than losses due to shipping hatching eggs. A harsh reality, but none the less true.

As a further note. Using medications without a diagnosis has the very real potential to do more harm than good. Just as in humans, one antibiotic that will cure a problem can also be to totally ineffective, or compound a different problem. So without knowing what you are dealing with, it is playing russian roulette.

Remember unless you know something to be fact and not internet rumor you are edging close to flaming and slander which is not allowed on BYC. Tread carefully.

Deleted, because I dont want to start trouble..but I read a post on another site where someone else was having some of the same issues and they ordered from a different hatchery. Maybe the cold weather is a factor.

No one can assume this is ae without, a clear diagnosis from a qualified avian vet, just trying to find some sort of common link here.
Originally the argument was that it was only the MM chicks that were getting sick so it could not have been the cold. Now maybe if we seethat this is happening with other early season orders from different hatcheries, cold may be part of the problem, I dunno.
It just seems so strange to me that only some of the chicks are exhibiting these signs, and people who have a seperate flock are not getting sick.
I myself am not making any accusations.

With all these chicks dying let me ask this.
a couple years ago we had something around here called west nile virus. It killed birds all over the area. We saw a bluejay at the water & it was sick, I called the county They took the bird as it was still living . They told us IT WAS West Nile virus that KILLED the Blue Jay.
Wonder if the Mareks scare could be some thing like this? Just wondering
