MEAN Rooster

I have this rooster that is MEAN! I got my tail kicked badly! He has attacked me twice now without any threat from me. He also has attacked my teenage child just for walking outside. I have 14 hens. If I rehome him to someone who does not care about the threat of having their tail kicked by a rooster, would my hens be okay? Do I really need a rooster? And if so how do I find a "nice" one? I raised "Big Byrd" from birth, with hopes that he would not be so mean.. WRONG! When you are done laughing about my tail getting kicked by a 2-foot rooster let me know what you suggest... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! Thanks friends.

No need at all for a Rooster unless you want fertile eggs?..
The Hens will be fine without one and continue to lay great eggs..

Raising from birth and your interactions might have created this monster. Check out some rooster training techniques before you try again.

Your hens will be fine and happier in my experience with out a rooster.

I wouldn't rehome him anywhere other than freezer camp... cuz some people might get mad when they get attacked cuz they thought he wouldn't go after them and then abuse him in some manner. Or intend on fighting. Those aren't my USUAL thoughts, so not sure why I said that.

If he is just now attacking you, I'm guessing pretty young still? The meaner the roo the sweeter the stew.

If you do rehome him, please do so with full disclosure so no one else gets hurt. Do not give him to a home with young children.

You don’t need a rooster. Your hens will be fine. It will cause a little hiccup for them at first, but they’ll get over it.

The only place I’d rehome a roooster like that to my freezer.

Agree with everything posted already. Some roo's are just nasty, some are not. How you interact with them can matter sometimes, not always. I don't keep the mean ones, they go in the freezer. Having a nasty rooster is NOT fun and can be dangerous. Re-homing can be difficult and cockfighting exists so unless I know where it's going to, I just cull. It's an unfortunate fact of hatching and raising chickens that you will end up with extra roo's. I've got two roo's now that are really nice birds, no issues with them at all, never attacked anybody, treat their girls well. But I've had some really bad ones too, all raised and treated the same. It's not necessary to have a roo unless you want to fertilize and hatch your own eggs, I enjoy them for the most part so I keep some, based on my numbers of hens, and always choose by personality and temperament those that get to stay.

Hens don't need a rooster around. They'll lay eggs without him. Roosters are for fertilizing eggs, protecting the hens if they all free-range, and some people keep them just because they're pretty.

I raised a Cochin rooster from birth -- a breed that is very often praised for its docile nature -- at right at two years old, he turned and became the single meanest animal I've ever known. Nearly killed his hens and attacked people till the day a predator took him.

Some people don't mind keeping mean roosters, if they don't interact with the flock a pets. A plus side to mean roos is that they will defend their hens more fiercely against predators, so long as he's not attacking them himself. It's worth a shot trying to re-home him online, but you'll want to mention that he's aggressive.
