Memorial Day hatch along

I’ve got a broody who’s been sitting since the 2nd! I’ve candled the eggs a couple of times and they all seem to be developing at the same rate. Nothing to see now except the air pocket. How do you tell at this point if the eggs is still viable? (One exploded on her legs!) Keeping my fingers crossed she hatches them out.

So I would do a candle of them. See which are still alive and kicking and aren’t. That’s the best way to prevent more explosions.

I know it’s scary. Gently pick up the eggs with a ziplock bag. Candle through the closed bag. That way, if it explodes, you’re safe!

We have four new chicks.

The two light ones and the brownish in the bottom are EE x EE, and the other looks like a Black Australorp x EE.

I candled seven eggs. Five were clearly developing. Two I couldn’t see into well enough. Another seven I didn’t check.

So if I’m candling at 17 days, how can I tell which eggs are still viable? I can’t actually see any movement...

One other question - my coop and run are all sand. The nestboxes too. Do I need to put a towel under Goldie and her eggs today? She’s at day seventeen.

Interim count: 7 hatched, 2 pipped, two looked okay, but haven't pipped (they get another day to try to get there), one was clearly deceased, but we're waiting on the other two to open it.

Six eggs under the Australorp. All look viable.

I am kinda late but I set mine May 15th, hopping for some to hatch first week of June.
