Memory Loss and Scary Moment

We have a pass code where I work that allows us to get keys from boxes to various buildings. each person has a code that allows them into any key box. I used my code every day, in fact every few minutes through out the day. One day I got a key out of a box, went into the building for just a couple of minutes and when I came out to return the key I could not remember the code I had just used a couple of minutes before. I stood there waiting for the brain cell that contains that data to wake up for several minutes but never was able to remember the code. I finally had to go to our Lock Shop that keeps all the codes on file and have them tell me my code again. I have not had the problem again since. but it was the weirdest thing. and like you say pretty scary. I have seen a doctor since then and have a clean bill of health but still I am certain they are only missing something. It really is like some portion of my brain just stopped working.

Memory issues are NEVER part of normal aging. its a sign of something... could just be stress... or the sign of something else.

I have a client right now who is 105 years old and she can tell me things from 80 years ago. She will be looking for a book and tell me exactly where on a shelf it is and the colour of the book

Brain farts.. where you totally blank out but with simple cuing it comes back.. like forgetting your phone number and looking at a phone face and then it will come back to you, or forgetting someones name but you can remember where you met them and their childrens names but for some reason their name escapes you... this is normal.

Please see your family physician and make sure you document this so you can recall everything for the doctor, also make a journal of the stresses you were under

I went to the grocery store one day and couldnt remember my debit card number. Total blank. I use this stupid card just about everyday for 1 reason or another. They laughed and ran it as credit. Went again, I didnt even think about it. Normally my fingers just type in the number. Nope, brain fart again. I just stared at the key pad. I know the 4 numbers, just cant get the sequence right. I tried 2 or 3 times. Nope, nada. I had this card for YEARS! I still cant remember what it was. Finally went to the bank and had it changed. Im awful with numbers anyway. Oh well.

If it makes you feel any better I'm 33 and just forgot what brilliant thing I was going to post in an attempt to make you feel better

SEE...it happens to everyone! I had to stop typing for a second to think of my age and make sure I was right before posting it....maybe it's normal?!?!?

I had huge issues with temporary memory loss when my migranes were at their worst in my late teens. I would foget people in my family's names, my phone number, my addy, i even blanked on my dh's name a few times. It sucked.
i would go get it checked out, usually it is caused by something.

When I'm tired I get aphasic, I forget words, forget what I'm saying in the middle of a sentence, etc. Its kinda like drunks talking funny, but for me it happens when I'm fatigued. A nap and I'm all better. I think it is the speech form of being clumsy when you're tired.

Maybe you were just tired.

That happens to me all of the time! And then later, I cant remember things about that time period. Aphasic huh? Heading to look that one up...

That's me, too. I've more than once made DH laugh by coming out of our bathroom, PJs on, after a relaxing soak, and announcing, "I'm tired. I'm going to go get in the bath." (I mean bed).

Kim, not to get personal but you're not starting peri-menopause are you? This is VERY common in women who are beginning peri-menopause. I started peri-menopause at 41 and just started menopause at 47.

I was really concerned because there is an early form of Alzheimers that starts in the late 30's to early 40's. I went to the doctor had a complete physical, had all kinds of tests done and that's when she noticed that my hormone levels were lower than before. Not substanially lower but lower. I thought I was losing my mind.

Definitely talk to your doctor and have your hormone levels checked. It helped me (somewhat) keep my sanity. Oh, and what my doctor suggested for me was soy. It worked wonders for me.

I work third shift and I always blank out on things. Alot of us at work complain about it. I think the funniest one was a story a friend (let's just call her Candy) there told me about how she ran into an old friend but couldn't remember her name. While they were talking, (Candy racking her brain for a name) the friend apologised and asked HER what her name was. This threw Candy for such a loop she couldn't remember her own name.
