Men and chickens.

Maybe women are naturally more socially inclined than men?

The same is probably true of Facebook, Snapchat, etc.

Based on my marriage, I am definitely The social one....my husband, on the other hand, not so much! He spends more time surfing and reading on the web.

Mine has a weirdly social streak--he still checks his Facebook, but I bailed from it years ago. LOL On the other hand, he detests talking on the phone, and he is *very* irritated when anyone drops by without calling first. Thinking it all balances out? I was very surprised to see he checks the FB version of BYC every day (and comes up with some pretty nifty, chicken-y stuff), but for some reason, he just doesn't come here. I should ask why, it might shine light on this wee mystery. :D

He was in the shower :lau but I got da goods! Okay, first of all, he's about the male-est man I've known (60 yr. old retired "grunt" of 23 yrs., Army/Oregon National Guard), unquestionably "guy thought processes" in his noggin. LOL! He says he'll scroll through and read but rarely posts to threads because of previous experiences with trolls. =( He mentioned for example saving a little 7 yr. old girl who was being torn to pieces in his front yard, years ago, by a pit bull. In his colorful language :gig he mentioned trying to discuss the pit bull dilemma on FB and a certain element is just completely unreasonable (all of this just for instance), so he quit trying to interact completely yrs. ago. He says that sooner or later someone rips into you for having wrong opinions, etc. =( So he'll read and surf around, exactly like your hubby, @Chick-N-Fun , but he won't chat.

So there's one from the Chicken Gallery. :D

I’ve gotten help here and learned so much from some very nice gentlemen on this site ( @rjohns39 is top of that list!)

I spent 8 hours (a few of them before sun up) sitting oh hay bales out front of a tsc. This was with an increasingly large group of men (1 other woman) this summer hoping that when the delivery truck showed up, it was going to have the promised 63 gas generators on it.

This was just before a hurricane this September.

8 hrs is a long time to make small talk with a bunch of strangers in 90 degree heat. Almost everyone there had chickens. Turns out, “talkin’ chicken” is a nice way to pass the time!

Don’t WE all know it?!?

At some point, I brought up BYC. The one other lady said she knew of it. Honestly, she wasn’t the nicest personality in the group. It was like she had a chip on her shoulder about everything and was pretty oppositional about almost every topic brought up.
She was plain ornery.
Maybe it was the heat. Maybe she was just stressed, because let’s face it, waiting on a hurricane is no fun at all.
But she said, “I don’t need a bunch of strangers on the internet telling me how to raise my animals” and the men all seemed to go along with her. They were nodding in agreement.

No offense to any of the very nice guys here, but Maybe it goes back to the age old “men don’t ask for directions” thing!

So if they need help, a man might ask their dad or other family member first or a neighbor or the farmer down the road next or the guy at the feed store in a pinch, but not a bunch of strangers on the Internet!

IMHO, This is a crying shame because there is so much we can learn from one another, and I think we do a great job of it here at BYC.

The members of BYC are predominantly female. Why is this?
Where I live out of the 18 people I know who keep chickens 17 are men.
I would like to see a better balance. What could be done to attract more men to BYC?
It's probably because they are on the Car Fixing Forums. You know showing off their prowess fixing dead beat cars. IDK. :lau:lau:lau:lau Showing up dumb females who don't know nuttin' about how the internal combustion engine works. I took one of the trivia test about cars. I got a 90% score. Said most men couldn't even get 75%. I didn't cheat either, my ex was a mechanic. I better know that it's righty tighty, lefty loosey. :ya:th

I totally understand where GrannyHeeney's guy is coming from. I spent (too) many years as a newspaper editor. It felt like every single day, someone -- online, on the phone or in person -- wanted to tell me in no uncertain terms how I had injured them and/or ruined their life. Hey, I didn't make the laws; we just ran the results of court proceedings. And, honestly, I was never sorry that in a regional newspaper, we didn't have space to run the names of every bridesmaid and the color and style of each of their dresses.

In my current life, I don't do Facebook. I don't answer phone numbers I don't recognize. I have a gate across the driveway. But I do love BYC. People here have differing opinions but don't resort to name-calling or insulting responses. It's a safe, welcoming place to learn and share experiences.

Maybe if the whole world followed that good example ...

My husband loves my chickens. He will build any coop or chicken run I want. He loves to build something but not the maintenance! He also will read about them, look on YouTube, etc but not join in on discussions on the internet or Facebook! I know there is nothing I could do to get him to join BYC!

You just described my husband. Are we married to the same man? :gig
