Metal garbage cans for storage????

I see several people using those metal garbage can's with lids for storing their food. Do you leave it in the bag and just lift the whole bag of feed into it or do you dump it out into it??? I have three...one for DE, one for feed, and one for Cracked corn.

This may sound crazy but I do both...
In the winter I dump the feed, DE, oyster shell, grit, scratch in the cans directly but in the summer I keep the feed/scratch in the sacks. Reason being... I've found that sometimes because of the heat the feed doesn't stay as fresh for as long, and if it's still in the sack it's a lot easier to remove and dispose of & I can be sure I've gotten every bit of it.

I dump mine in. It's alot easier to get out that way.

I do both, depending if I feel like lifting the bag to dump it. I feed whole grains though so now I have to dump and mix and dump and mix LOL

I still have some in the bags still that I am not using yet that are in cans.

I used plastic cans with lids but the critters chewed threw in no time!

We leave our feed/scratch/DE in the bags in the cans throughout the year. Since I'm the main care-provider, it just makes it easier for me to deal with when the bags get low (we buy feed and food grade DE by the 50# bags, I'm just over 100#'s).

I had thought about just dumping the feed directly in the galvanized cans that we use but I figured that keeping all of that in the bags makes sure that I'm feeding the oldest stuff first, without any of the feed getting stale (by being buried by adding the new feed), if that makes sense?

Thanks a bunch! I will leave it as is...I just opened the bag and put the whole bag in...then I decorated my can

It says "Here Chick, Chick, Chick" in puple and has a smiley face on it with the handle being the nose! My little boy loves it!

I dump all my 50lb. bags right into the cans and never add any fresh grain until that is all used up. You never want to dump new on top of old. I use all my grain bags for trash bags and I have even offered them on freecycle for others to use. I do through alot of grain here so always have plenty of grain bags!

I keep mine in the galvanized cans. I never add more until the can is empty. I use a scoop measure for filling the feeders. I keep 2 cans in the main laying house and the rest where I need it - 1 can for starter at the nursery coop, etc . I have about 11 cans I use for all the different feeds.

I also do not have running water in my barn. In the winter when everything here freezes we keep two 70 gallon rubbermaid cans filled with clean water to make sure the barn always has a water source daily.
