Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

I guess it is good that she is willing to work with you. I don't blame you for not wanting to start your search over or settle for a different color. You had your heart set on these two. I guess at this point, you have to believe that, if it was meant to be, it will be. I hope it works out for you!

@NotableNancy and @trsturself , I loved reading about the differences in your birds and your friend's birds and how their interactions with you have changed over time. I guess there are a lot of variables that affect how the girls interact with you. Very interesting!

I, also, find it very interesting how, in the same breed, one hen looks like it should have been laying for weeks while another is just starting to get her wattles. Her is photo of my Dominiques side by side.

Even though Desdemona is a bit blurry, you can see the difference in development. Melissa, the one that is more advanced, has always been the smaller of the two. Isn't that crazy?

Two days in a row, Jed (the most mature RIR) gave what I could only imagine was the loudest egg song possible and no egg. Is that normal? Have any of you experienced a false alarm like that?

I looked under the coop and in the run and there is no sign of an egg anywhere. I imagine if someone was eating the eggs, there would be at least a wet spot on the ground from spilled egg whites. But, I have not seen anything. Is she just practicing her song?? It is a mystery to me.

If you think about how different any two dogs look (even in the same breed), or two humans from the same family, it makes sense that two chickens, even from the same breed, would also look different. Luck of the genetic draw. Unless they are identical twins, they SHOULD look somewhat different from each other. Even identical twins don't always look the same (one might be skinny, the other fat, due to different food preferences, for example).

YES! Mine did that to me all the time. Even today I heard an egg song and thought there would be an egg, nope. And my girls are 16 months old! I also think I heard a young one practicing an egg song. It was very jilted and odd sounding.

That's why they are able to have chicken shows and judge one chicken against another of the same breed.

Mine too! Kiwi, my Dellie, signs the egg song several times a day. Well, more like she squawks the same when she's thinking about laying, about to lay, just laid, or begging for treats.

LOL, I remember that from the Walking Dead!! Every show I see that has chickens I stop paying attention and watch them.
Yes, the chicks from that awful place. AND she waited until they were 6 weeks old to get them (paid more $$ too) so she wouldn't get a rooster because she has 2 and if she gets one she feels obligated to keep it bec. she couldn't live with herself if it was killed just because it was a rooster. Well, yup, she got a rooster!!! She was supposed to get 2 purebred Ameraucana and only got 1 and it certainly looks like a cockerel! Very pick comb. I broke the news to her and she's so funny, she thought it was such a pretty color pink and had absolutely no idea that meant rooster!!! We're not speaking of it now; she's hoping if we don't speak of it then he will turn back into a she!! AND he is a gorgeous Splash Ameraucana!!! I think she could actually sell him. So, now she won't get any blue eggs :( She did get one EE by accident though so hopefully a green one. Glad Baby and Victoria are both still sweet! How old are they? I'm sure you said but I forget. (being one of the eldest one in this group, I'm allowed

Agree... enabling group for sure!!
They are 14 1/2 weeks old or 3 months, one week and 3 days :) Most of them stopped being lap and shoulder birds a month or two ago, but I think I'm making some progress with the other three, Amelia at least who was still close to me a month ago lets me pet her without scurrying away every time, she's starting to squat a bit.

Not sure about the mystery bantam, agree with roo and your girls are looking great! I need to set up higher branches for mine and add boards at the bottom of the run for snow drifts on a couple sides.

Don't talk about snow!!! I don't even want to start considering that. I'm enjoying our beautiful weather too much. I don't want winter to ever come back!

I finally got my blog updated after all the projects and moving. I didn't put everything on there but I got most of it done. Nice to be done with that.

I am behind on the new postings....but I have to tell you guys since I am sworn to secrecy right now with most everyone else.

I AM GOING TO BE A GRANDMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My son and daughter-in-law just came over to tell us. God willing everything will go well and the baby is due around March 15th, it is very early now in the pregnancy so they are waiting to tell everyone except the immediate family. I know all of you won't be telling anyone else around me, so I know it is safe to tell you.

Aww, the chicks from that awful place? That's too sweet! Please do post a pic. I would love BLRW and SS, I keep hearing great things about the SS. I got the husband to come out in the run with me yesterday evening, Baby and Victoria, his Dorking, were both climbing on his shoulders and pecking at his earrings. After he left Victoria came over to me, hopped up on my shoulder but instead of walking on me she settled down right next to my face contently and stayed there until I told her I had to go. She's a sweet one for sure.

Speaking of SS, last night the husband and I were watching Season 2 of the Walking Dead (first time for him, I've watched 3 seasons) they showed the chickens on the farm they are staying on temporarily, there were definitely Speckled Sussex hens and Buff Orpingtons (poor Buffs got fed to the zombies!) but there was also the rear of a blue hen and a splash rooster maybe Orpingtons as well. There were some chicks and few week olds too, it was mentioned their mother was gone, black and/or barred I think. Its just funny seeing that now, definitely something I didn't tune into a year ago.

Oh and I would definitely pay $5 a dozen. Heck I payed $5 at the store for half a dozen organic, even though there were cheaper options, just because it came in the clear plastic half dozen container and I figured those would be nice for gifts. I know you can order them separate but I needed eggs anyway. Lately I've been getting our eggs from this Fresh Fork Market food truck and CSA, my sister and mom have a share and I go with them to get local meat, pastured pork and bacon, yes please! but also because the family in our town haven't had their egg sign up in over a month, just veggies. And that's where I'm heading off to now.
I must have missed something, what "awful place?"
You guys are now making me want a SS and also look into watching the Walking Dead.
Plus, I need to start charging more for eggs!

I believe it was just the other day somebody said they weren't sure if this is a support group or enabling group. I agree with whoever that was!
I think this was me, but others have also pretty much said the same thing. We're all just a bunch of enablers.

Eek. I'm not sure if I would be a bit concerned they have something that they could give to your other birds. I'm know you are going to quarantine but I'm not sure if I would want to deal with sick birds. Quite the dilemma and just my 2 cents worth about 1 cent!

Like the back up plan. Lost your mind.... ummm... maybe a long time ago

along with the rest of us. I actually almost called Meyer to add another chick to my order... just in case I lose one in transit!!!
I might be concerned as well about illnesses brought to the flock too.

Your poor friend, sounds a little in denial there.

OK... mystery here.... does anyone have any guesses as to what breed? It is probably about 8 weeks old and is very small. Bantam something I guess...
very light colored legs. Gray/blue body with gold on the neck and very cuddly!

one of here BLRW behind Ameraucana

Anyone with land... you gotta get a few of these... she just got these where I work
and they are absolutely adorable... Alpacas!!

And a pic of my girls hanging out... NOT Meyer

Oh my gosh, her chicks are so cute. I agree that one does look like a rooster too. Those alpacas! Adorable!!!

Your girls are growing too, I love the natural branches in the coop and they all look so pretty just hanging out. Especially all those feather hairdos they have too.

That is so "common sense". I wish I would have thought of that too. You explain it so well.

That's why they are able to have chicken shows and judge one chicken against another of the same breed.
More common sense.

Snow? No!!! We need to keep that 4 letter word off of these posting until December at least!

I try to keep up with my blog but it's so hard. I'll be sure to check yours out.

The place my friend got her chicks.... in Lancaster... she paid a fortune and they were covered in mites and she didn't even get what she ordered! Supposed to be 2 Ameraucana and only got one and it's a cockerel. She paid for all pullets. She ordered 2 BLRW and got 3, was supposed to get a Swedish Flower Hen and it's not. I'm not sure what that one is either...lighter than a buff color and feathered feet. But at least she'll get eggs from it and it's cute. So many problems and the place with a pig-sty!

Exactly!!

I know... the Alpacas are so sweet. Names are Sophie, Faye and Heather. They look like stuffed animals!

When it's 100 hot and humid I'm thinking longingly of the snow. I'm a cold lover rather than heat
