Meyer Hatchery - Worst Experience Ever

My chicks arrived from Meyer July 5th. I ordered 25 and received 26. All were alive and are doing great as of today.

We had 3 different hatcheries ship last week.2 had orders of 35 or more..with the extras and no losses.Meyer had 36 with the extra and 25 were doa..since they can't reship the order I had to get a refund..so they charged me all the shipping on 11 chicks..now I have some high dollar hatchery birds not worth half of the amount I have in them now.
All the other hatcheries are shipping in larger than normal boxes Meyer shipped in the same size box they ship in in the winter and cool weather.
We have to deal with shipping all year long and just don't have this kind of loss even in the extreme heat or extreme cold.

I talked to my Post Office before I ordered. I just went down and talk to them and told them I was wanting to order chicks and asked about their policy. They warned me and advised me NOT to order them now. They said it's too hot. The large trucks that the mail is shipped on- the temperatures are suffocating and as hot as an oven. They are in there for hours before being moved to smaller trucks and a sorting center. I took their advice and selected to have my chicks shipped in October. Nothing is worth having chicks killed in transit. I may want them now- but realize I must be practical. BTW- I ordered from Meyers. Hopefully in October when the weather has cooled, my chicks will all arrive alive and healthy. I don't think Meyers is to blame for the dead chicks.

We received our 3rd order from Meyer last Tuesday.
Meyer personnel have always been helpful and in the event of a chick that died 12hrs after delivery in June supportive and compassionate. They gave me credit on my next order that arrived 4 wks later. All alive and well.
Last Tuesday's order were bounding out of the box. All healthy and happy.
We chose Meyer because they had the breeds we wanted, they have great prices, and so far all the females were females and the males were males. We also chose Meyer because they are located in Ohio, as are we.
We will order from them again.

I've ordered from Meyer's twice. The first time, no problems. When I went to order the next year, they said I had a credit with them, which puzzled me. I ordered and this time, several of the chicks were weak and did not make it. I didn't feel I should make an issue of it, since they had given me credit for the last order when I *didn't* need or want it. It kind of worked out in the end.

The chicks that didn't do well were porcelain d'Uccles. The next year I tried ordering those, and they turned out to have stopped carrying them. I guess I wasn't the only person who had problems with those. I don't know that I blame the hatchery, though. We've had issues with the porcelains being just less hardy and less long-lived than the regular mille fleurs.

I would order from them again, if they had what I was looking for.

I wouldn't order chicks this time of year in any case. We've had too many miserably hot days. I am trying to find hatching eggs to buy for a breed I am interested in, but eggs only - not chicks in August. If the hatching eggs don't survive the hot trip, it will be too bad, but not as sad as a dead little peep.

I never posted a follow up. I did eventually get the money credited back to my CC. Took several weeks. No actual excuse as to why it happened, especially when I was charged so long after the actual shipments took place. Oh well.

As for those who said it was too hot. The high was in the 70s when those chicks shipped. Perfect, mild temperatures.

This sounds awful, and it was my fear ordering chicks thru the mail - getting a box of dead chicks. I ordered my first chicks ever from meyer, all arrived healthy in early july. One died within the first week, but everyone else is doing great. Their customer service called me the day before my order was to ship, to offer substitutions for one breed of chick i had ordered that they didn't have enough of. I had a good experience and would order from them again. I'd rather buy locally and avoid the shipping altogether, but the local sellers here only sell straight run, and i wanted sexed females.
